DL50 Ignition Battery

Newbie to gas engines: I know I can use a 4.8 volt battery for the ignition, but how strong does it have to be? Do I need a 1100 or 1500Mah??? What about the connector to the switch, can it be anything regular like Futaba, JR, Hitec or does it have to have a deans connection????

Thanks for your help!!!

Konrad

Hey Konrad:

I like to use a 2000 Mah NiMh 4.8 Volt pack on mine, and can generally run 5-6 flights before I have to recharge. The pack has a regular JR plug on the end.

Regards,

Dennis

Re: DL50 Ignition Battery

Agreed - 2000-2600mah 4cell NiMH is the way to go. I run a 2600mah 4.8v pack on my DL50 ignition. I had a brand new pack so I used it...Regular JR plug. You can get away with less but once you are using AA cells you may as well use a decent capacity for some margin for error. At 4.8V the ignition will consume 400-500mAh. Lots of guys run 1300mAh Sub A (2/3A) cells.
Like this pack..http://www.thunderboltrc.com/index.p...roducts_id=535

ALSO...
I use an MPI heavy duty switch...it also has 3 lights to show batt voltage under load built in...Green good,Orange CAUTION, RED - don't fly ! http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/MPI5470.html
I check my packs too with a load meter but this switch works like a charm. Again I had it on the shelf I am not sure I would have purchased it for this purpose the standard MPI HD switch for $16 is just fine. Like this one...http://www.thunderboltrc.com/index.p...roducts_id=383

TIP - I use dental floss to secure the ignition plug to the battery and switch plugs, innexpensive fool proof method to prevent a plug vibrating loose. Make sure your battery and ignition are mounted firmly on foam to help insulate them from engine vibration. Enjoy your DL50 I got into gas last season it is great once you get everything set to go.

Re: DL50 Ignition Battery

I'm running a 1400Mh Nicad on my ignition and have never had a bit of greaf, 4-6 flights in a day and no problem at all. I have an optical kill switch, and a heavy duty switch.
This might be on the low end of what you will need, but this set up works fine.

I don't use dental floss, I use a bit of tape on the connections, the result is the same, no chance of vibration will unplug the connection

Re: DL50 Ignition Battery

52cc gas with 2700mah nimh 6v for ign and I fly 2-3 flights a day/every day for 3 wk straight and it barely moves off the 6v mark.

I only charge it for something to do
