New Lithium Ion Round Cells

There is a very interesting thread on RC groups about a new generation of Lithium Ion Round Cells using new nano technology. The cells are showing up in the latest (brand new) 28V and 36V power tools from Milwaukee, Makita, DeWalt, Black and Decker.

The thread deals with the subject of extracting the cells from the packs and adapting them for use in 30 size electric R/C helicopters. The results so far are tremendous and it is certainly exciting reading.

So far this technology seems to have similar performance to the latest ProLite cells (12-15C nominal, 20-25C burst), no thermal runaway potential (i.e. safe cells, not like current lipos and li-ions), relatively cheap (10S 4000mAH pack for ~$75 to 125 US), and very fast recharge rates. Gary Goodrum from TPPacks.com is currently one of the testers.

Exciting stuff.

I was reading a past EFI and Gordon Whitehead was useing some round cells called SAFON CELLS.These to are round type of lithm based cells. But had said he hadn't heard of anybody importing them to the U.S. yet.Suppose to be safe charging too.

Like it or not electric is going to be the way to go. Personally if I coudl afford it ,,, it would be all I would fly. No mess, no fuss never tune, just plug and play. I recently just set up my Logo 14, I have not had the chance to actually fly it, hoveered it out at a freinds shop to get everything trimmed in. I can tell you even from just doing some small hops and stick movements it is going to have insane power. I put in a a HV 10S2P lipo setup though :P

lithium ion cells

Just thought you guys would find this site interesting. Can you imagine one minute charge times! and I just received a GP Polycharge 4 for christmas will it shortly be obsolete.

I have been watching the thread daily on RCGroups eagerly. I am mostly interested in their application for larger planes.

What I have gleaned from the 30+pages.

The V28 Lithium ion power pack is by Milwaukee.
The power pack contains 7 cells and each cell is 28mmx70mm and weighs about 100g ea.
The cells are 3000mah.
The Emoli cells are made here in Canada.
As was posted earlier the testers are saying these cells are 12-15c continuous, and 20-25 burst. 15c you realize is 45amps and they say the cells are barely warm at this level after discharge.
They are treating them like lipos and charging them at 1-2c which is 3-6amps on the lipo chargers we have now with balancers.
Of course this is still early and the longevity of the cells isn't known yet.
But I am hopeful, especially since these cells are much more crash durable than any lipo pouch. The price for these cells is also much better than the equivalent lipo.

Here are the cells that everyone is really excited about on the RC Groups thread - DeWalt will be using them soon.

http://www.a123systems.com/html/technology.html

30-100C discharge, 5 minute 90% recharge rates, high energy density, non-combustable nano-technology.

Who needs 100C discharge? Thats 0.6 minutes of flying! lol

Very interesting nonetheless.

The Toshiba cells are based on the same underlying Li-Ion nano technology as the EMoli and ABC systems cells. Li-Ion Nano - get used to the term because it's going to be very important to R/Cers!

These sound good but I don't like to get to excited about the hype. Right now these cells are vaporware to us. I like to see how they perform in actual tests with our aircraft first to see if they will actually meet our needs.
Still I will keep my eye on them.
