Hey What's this about 80%, are you sure? Mine has kept me quite happy all year, giving me nice long flights with my LiPo's, so now that you've twigged me to this 80% thing I'll have to do a propper load test with the What meter and see. Let you all know shortly

Test Results

Ok Your right, I put a 6.5 amp load on three different E'Tec 1200 Mah two cell packs, they all delivered the goods from 6.9 amps down to 5.8 amps under load and the Whatmeter said in each case I pumped 1000 mah (give or take 20) through by the time I got to 5.8 amps so that's close enought to the 80% that your talking about.

Anyone else want to let us know how close to the rated charge capacity that their brand of charger actually delivers to a pack?

I can see why I might want another charger to get maximum yeild from my packs. It might mean that I give two pack at time to the Hobbico then finish charge on a different charger, since I already have the Hobbico. Hmmmm things to ponder, and I thought so highly of it befor this,

Triton

There's more to this than meets the eye I think, since Chris found no difference with his buddies Triton one wonders what one is paying extra for or if they are both delivering 100% after all?

It would be nice to get an extra 20% flying time from one's existing packs....

I'll try this again as soon as I can get access to one the other members on our local clubs' Triton.

I'm still curious about the the other brands of chargers out ther though.

The manual for the Hobbico MkII implies that the charger terminates at the end of the CC portion of the charge. If this is correct, it would indeed only charge a Lithium cell to 80-90% SOC depending on the charge rate selected. (If you wanted a more complete charge, you would have to reduce the current setting.)

This is a significant limitation, but it isn't all bad. That first 80-90% can be had in an hour. That last 10-20% takes another hour. Plus, the longer the cell stays at or near 100% the shorter its life. Plus any imbalance in a series pack will cause much greater problems when attempting a 100% charge.

Another limitation of this charger is the current capability. 1A limits you to the small stuff unless you like waiting...

I have no data to support an argument for or against this statement. I was actually in a LHS trying to help a new e-flyer when the question of a charger came up. The LHS guy had no clue so I called the Hobbico Service dept phone number. The 80% number is what he gave me for the MKII fast field charger with Li-Pos.
BTW, (RSCAMP) the charge current will go up to 2A max with a min of 200Ma.
