Music wire is sometimes nickel coated for rust proofing and this may disturb the heat treat process...you need the pure music wire, non coated.

You can try Metal Supermarkets. I've used them a couple of times...... Although I just went to the Edmonton store, and what I needed was in stock.

It's worth a phonecall.

Try Thomas Skinner. They carry just about everything related to machinery and tools. Thier head office is just outside Vancouver I believe.

That's were I buy mine from. (The local store in Mississauga)

Spring steel is actually closer to ANSI 1045 to ANSI 1055.
Go with 01 tool steel.

Small parts are easilly machined, filed, or otherwise cut.
Use a simple torch and heat it up to a uniform cherry red, then quench in oil.
After quenching it might look a bit burnt in color.
Use some emery paper to sand a clear spot, then wave the torch over your part slowly until it shows a straw brown color. That would be about RC58-60 (Rockwell C scale). A file would run over it like glass with little cutting effect.

If desperate, go with a "W" tool steel.
"W" stands for water quenched.

Just notice that they carry 01 tool steel in the 2mm size that your looking for, 36" length.

.078" is the same as 2mm.

Re: Drill Rod / Blank

Fastenal and Brofasco in the Belleville area carry drill rod, and will order sizes not stocked.
