Anemometer at Princess Auto

Hi all, not sure if this is the right forum for this. Princess auto has an anemometer for sale (19.99). It measures wind in all the basic measurements, and temperature. This is listed as a special buy, which means quantities are limited.

I figure it would be good for the field as a wind-speed indicator, or on the bench as an EDF thrust output measurement.

Either way, it is another cool toy...errr...scientific instrument for the hobby

You got me curious....

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...nd_Meter_.html

Pretty much the same item, and depending on the warehouse, about the same price.

So...for those who are not close to a PA, here you go!

Re: Anemometer at Princess Auto

I ordered the other anemometer that was available on Hobby King.
Seems to work as advertised. The only reason I ordered this one was the bright coloured case. Figured if I dropped it in the grass, I could easily find it over the black case one.

Re: Anemometer at Princess Auto

I have one of these and they are very accurate, especially with the wind gusts, should be for the money. A few guys have tested their Anemometer against mine and they all seem to bounce up and down. I mounted it on a pole and everyone likes to come over and check it out. 99% of the time you think the wind is at least 20 km/h and you look and see it's only 12 km/h.

Oh and the best part is the electronics is used on bicycles so I can set it to Max wind speed and it records it below the actually speed, or you can set it for the average wind speed OR the best is set it for calories burned, boy it makes you feel like you really had a great work out at the end of a long flying day.

It's for windsurfers.

Re: Anemometer at Princess Auto

Hi,

By the way this device measures wind only up-to 30m/s. This is about 58 its.
While this is a lot of wind it no where near the air exit velocity of an EDF.
If you want to measure static thrust, the simplest and most accurate way is to use a scale.

Happy landings,
Roger B.

Re: Anemometer at Princess Auto

Is there any real advantage to having an anemometer?

Doe anyone really say "oh, its 12 mph, so I can fly" or "Whoops, its 13 mph, better go home"? No. You just know by feel. I have yet to see anyone really use this as a "tool"

All you have to do is "feel" the wind to know whether or not you particular model will fly in any given wind.

Other than being an interesting gadget to play with for a little while, most just gather dust after being played with for a few weeks and the novelty wears off.

Mine sits on a pole and comes out everytime I go to the field and 99% of the flyers come over to have a look. Mine works very well for gusts and works in any direction, the max speed is a very nice feature. By resetting the max gusts I can see if the wind is going up or down as the day goes.

There are many gadgets we use but don't need. Besides the plane flies in still air all the time so the wind is only for us.

Re: Anemometer at Princess Auto

The KW club has one set up at the clubhouse. It sometimes works and you can see how fast the wind is on the website before you leave for the field. Kind of nice. I have a cowboy hardhat with a bunch of cooling holes in that whistle when it is too windy, and those nasty huge windmills in the back yard. When they are less than 6 seconds per revolution I know it is too windy.
