I'm converting a Raptor 30 to a 50. After lengthening the boom I'm pondering the connection between the rudder servo and the tail. Whats best? Use the wire method that comes with the conversion kit, or make one up with a 5mm? graphite tube. If I use the graphite tube option do I need to worry about the fact that it is unsupported down the length of the boom. Could vibration cause the
ball links to separate?

welcome,rokudan.I personally like the carbon option.where is your servo located?I like a tail boom mounted servo.I have never seen a link pop off due to vibration,I have seen the connection of the carbon,to the threaded steel fail on a bergen gasser in flight.the effect was quite dramatic.

Hi Drew,

I prefer to keep the servo mounted up front using the wire for tail control. This way the servo is not exposed to as much oil, and has a better chance of surviving a crash.

If you do choose to run the carbon rod it must be supported in the middle of the boom, otherwise the weight of the un-supported rod will fatigue the metal insert ends, eventually causing a failure.

Both systems work excellent, but it is important to have the proper support for each application.

I would stick with the regular set up.

I've ran the carbon rod for around 6 months or so, and it was the biggest problem I had with my helicopter. It came off at least 5 or 6 times on me in the air. It isn't a problem if your able to auto it in, but it is never a good thing to have comming off. It never ended up costing me any money, as I was able to land, but every time it scared me.

As colin said, its nice to get your servo out of the fuel too. If you check the ballance on your helicopter, I am willing to bet its a bit tail heavy as well.

I'm running my tail servo up front out of the exhaust and the tail holds just fine. I'm using 90mm tail blades and high gain (95%) on my GY401. Just make sure that your ball links are sized to be free moving but not sloppy at all.

Did you change your gear ratio?
