My buddy finally got his Stingray Quad a few days ago. Here is his build and flight video.

Re: Build and maiden flight with Stingray 500 Collective pitch Quad Copter

I like the idea of a collective pitch quad. but I would prefer to have a 4 motored quad.

Something about 2 motors and 6 belts makes me worry about drive-train reliability. Direct drive seems to be a more reliable option

Re: Build and maiden flight with Stingray 500 Collective pitch Quad Copter

I don't see why the concern for belts on a quad. Belts have been used for years to drive the tail rotor on RC helicopters for years and in some instances, even used in the main transmission itself. The tail on my gasser is belt driven and it's one LONG belt.

I can see with this setup, you will have perfectly synchronized rotors at all times, so now you're only dealing with one variable, getting the pitch on all four corners synchronized.

4 drive trains driven by one motor was my concern. I should have been more specific. I'm sure it works well. Has anyone heard the flight time he's getting with that thing?

Re: Build and maiden flight with Stingray 500 Collective pitch Quad Copter

Thanks Johnny for posting my first Quad coveter video
Price indeed is stiff. However it is a 500 size machine. So taking the 4 servos, one ESC, Motor adds up a bit. Also the frame and frame parts seem decent priced the biggest cost factor is in the control unit. I only bought it because I tried it out at IRCHA and felt like I need to learn to fly this thing.

BTW -> reliability on a quad is relative. If you use a quad with 4 motors instead of belt solution. It takes only one motor to fail in order to bring the quad down hard. So if talking about hex or even octo copters. Different story but a quad comes down by a single part failure. Unfortunate as it is.

Also for those who used to fly hard code 3d on helis -> this quad is a 3d machine but in a different way to regular helis.
