Check out Ivan Pettigrew's stable of electric aircraft -- almost all are electric and look like real airplanes and are float planes or flying boats too! Assembly is definitely needed, as is some building experience.

BTW, don't worry about your trainer not looking like a scale airplne, because it actualy is -- it obeys every one of the same rules that full-sized man-carrying aricraft do, but the design has been simplified for ease of assembly and repair.
You also might check out park flyers as you can put them into the car, whip out to the field, fly to your heart's content and come back home without spending all day at the field.
