Composite 1/9th scale Avro CF-100 Mk4

Today, I started making the fibreglass parts for one of four winter projects. The mould work was done by my late friend, Gary Strong. He designed the model and made the moulds in the late 1990's and sold them to me as he knew I really liked this jet. He did manage to make a couple of flying prototypes, but his illness prevented him from making any further models.

This model is being slightly redesigned to use twin 90 mm EDF units. The Arrow I designed, used a single Hoaye unit on 7 cells and produced 2150 watts of power at just under 90 amps. So a twin will give me at least 4300 watts of power. I am going to use the Change Sun EDF units as they have a more turbine like sound.

This model is totally composite so the wings and horizontal stab will need an internal redesign to keep them light. Gary had designed these as a foam core and as a rib and spar, so I have time to think this out. It'll be similar to the internal structure of the Arrow's composite wings.

Here is a picture of Gary Strong with the prototype at the old Bellville Jet Rally.

The first part is out of the mould, it's the main access hatch on top of the fuselage, it's size gives ample access to the interior.

I wonder if this would work, six Jato rocket bottle. I'd need the D size I think, more for show than anything, well, maybe. Talk about being committed for the takeoff, no aborting.

Wow! I've been looking for a jet to put my Changesun 90mm fans into. I was looking for an A-10 Warthog, but a Clunk would be even better as it's Canadian. Are you looking at selling some kits? If you are, I'm interested in one! Please let me know. Thanks, Jon

Like the concept but would check that with your MAAC zone director as I thought I read into the regulations no RC aircraft to have solid rockets on board as no way to shut them down in horizontal flight. Only vertical launch model rockets launched under their clearance rules; horizontal and vertical .

Yeah, I believe you are right Len. If I did give it a go, I'd want to behind something solid 😎

No have no real plans at this point to start manufacturing kits again, however, if it is a good flyer, I will most likely make some. It was Gary's desire to manufacture them only in Canada and I have made over two hundred kits in the past decade or so. Kinda tired of doing it. But, who knows, might need the cash down the road.

Re: Composite 1/9th scale Avro CF-100 Mk4

Great that you have finally started to reproduce Gray's CF 100 Jets after talking about these for last few years. I'm preparing one of 2 prototypes that I have kept in Gray's memory back to flying condition. All older electronics have been changed already with newer Hite servos and wiring. Since this jet is setup for single Dynamax with OS91DF engine that It flew on, I am going to change it for turbine engine set up that means a custom bifabricated stainless steel exhaust pipe will be made for it.

John as you know, I asked you to layup a newer cannon pack section for my model since original section got squished-in damage to it. If you could do that, then I will fabricate it myself on this model by cutting out older one. We can work out it's cost so I can have it.

I will post CF 100's pics soon so people interested can actually see how model will b e by the time your first model is produced.
