Re: Wing Build 101
Yes the top was basically flat if viewed from head on. There is some roll coupling and ailereron differential is needed although this is probably more due to the lower wing placement of the 330. We'll see how she handles in the air!
It will be fun to compare the two wings come next season. Now on to the lightening templates...lots of cutting Lee

Re: Wing Build 101
Hey Lee! I just found this thread by accident, and I`ve read it all and am now subscribed (I can`t believe I missed that) !!
Nice work on the progress so far. I think your mod to the wing to make it symmetrical will really help during inverted!! Question for you.... Is there anyway you can keep a running tally/progress report on the weight of the wings??? I would like to use some of your data to help think of some other mods I can do to my Carden builds The key weights I`m interested in are... * Cores as they stand now, before lightening * Cores after lightening * Cores after sheeting * Weight removed during separation of aileron from wing * Finished weight once hinged * Covered weight * Weight with servos / linkages / hardware installed Thanks Trev |

Its too bad its winter, I would be interested in hearing your results, as I am basically playing with similar changes Flat on top is essentially how every modern F3A model is setup. In recent years we have been putting the wings lower and lower to improve the look in rolls (lower wings give a better presentation in rolling maneuvers). However, a side effect to this was increased adverse roll coupling (rolling onto the back while in KE, or opposite to rudder direction). The wings in the above picture from ZN have been modified for me to have added dihedral to try and mitigate that coupling. They now will have a 4mm gap at the center when placed upside down on a table. I don't think they will make it to my house though in time to get any real testing done with them So might be a while until I know what effect it had. I am sure it will help the coupling, but concerned that it might affect other aspects of flight. |

Re: Wing Build 101
Hi Trev. Welcome to my little diatribe I will weigh stuff for you as I go along. Just doing the cut out templates which take time. Got my foamie knife too. Cool tool and sure beats my old way of drilling a hole, then using a small bow to cut out the foam
Yes Chad its too bad about it being the end of the season. I just winterized and stored all my big planes and am building another foamie for the gym. Still working in the garage while i cut out foam, but will be going down to the shop soon...freezing at night in the garage! Lee

Re: Wing Build 101
OK about ten more hours making and cutting templates and coring out one wing. After Trev's suggestion I bought a hot knife from my sculpting supply house (yes I am a sculptor too...just a Rennaisance man at heart!) and ..hack, gasp,,sneeze...I have a lightened wing

Re: Wing Build 101
The templates are two layers of bristleboard that are cut to the size of the blank. I then marked out everywhere I shouldn't cut (the CF areas, wing tube, servo bays, hardmounts for horns etc) and then I marked out the cross hatch in pencil than usinf a chisel tip marker went over the lines to make them about 1/4 inch wide. Using a new blade in my utility knife I cut out all the areas in between for both templates at once since you need a bottom and a top template. One doesn't have to be exact as it will all be sheeted anyway and the hot knife is easy to guide in a straight line if your template edges are a little off.

Re: Wing Build 101
For Trev, the core as it stands (phenolic in not glued, most CF on, ply servo horn mounts glued) weighed 22.55 onces. After coring...
So shed about 3 ounces which sounds like not much, but its mostly outboard so snaps should be quicker and faster stops for more precision! Yeah, that's the ticket Lee
