What colour shows up best in the sky?

Being a little long in the tooth I need all the help I can get for orientation. I'm going to rebuild my 600 size Hughes 500 and want to know what is the easiest colour to spot in the sky whether sunny or cloudy and against trees. I figure I'll get a bodyman I know to paint it this winter and I hope to have it finished by spring. In the meantime I have been having a great time flying my three cell 500 size heli.

Re: What colour shows up best in the sky?

I've found a bright yellow works well ..... and for help in orentation ..... one underside wing panel flourescent orange but everything does eventually blend together over distance and size has a bit to say on visual preception. Best advice I can give ..... choose a colour that is not normally seen in the sky and try to keep the plane close ... no further than 5 or 6 hundred feet out.

Light blue with little clouds.

Really - I agree with bright yellow or red, especially with some white or black for contrast.

Black is the BEST :=)

But everything I have has florescent orange on it: either sprayed from cans or trim strips.

Re: What colour shows up best in the sky?

Bright yellow and orange applied in ways that differentiate clearly top and bottom - that is why they are used on Coast Guard and Search and Rescue helicopters.

Re: What colour shows up best in the sky?

Light blue with little clouds eh? Thanks for the input Dean but I think I'm leaning towards yellow for the body and maybe a bright orange or red for the landing gear. I am totally colour challenged so does red go with yellow better or does orange go better. Phil your two tone idea sounds interesting maybe when I get the pod for under the heli done that could be orange and the body yellow with red landing gear. How does that sound or would it be too many fifferent colours at once?

Re: What colour shows up best in the sky?

Call me crazy, but I don't think the colour matters one bit. You either know where the heli is or you don't. Once you've lost orientation even the most effective colour isn't going to help you. That's just my take though.

Re: What colour shows up best in the sky?

For me it does because I fly near trees and sometimes things can blend into the shadows and the fall colours. I guess it is also more for an elevated level of comfort on my part. I plan on having it done right so I want to make sure I get it right because repainting won't be an option for a long time .(unless I crash of course fingers crossed on that one)
