I need some advice, seein's I know nothing about electric flight. I was thinking of maybe going electric in my Ultra RC Giles 202 UL 29% and I want ultimate performance. So what motor, controller and batteries do I need and which hobby store in Canada is the best to buy from for this type of stuff?

Re: What motor an controller?

Hi Ed,
I am flying mine on a Plattenberg xtra25-13 and a schulze 55K controller,
9 to 10S, 3700mah batteries, spinning a 20x10 prop.
The plane weighs around 9.5 lbs. and flies amazing.
This setup is expensive, however, it can be done using cheaper motor/ESC, you will need around 2000 watts.
Give me a call if you want to discuss it.

Re: What motor an controller?

That looks awesome Maqsood, I was reading a build thread on RC Groups about this plane and it had almost the same set up as yours. I cleaned out my mail box and forgot to save your number can you PM it again and this time I'll write it down.

The Pletty 30-10 Evo will be the ticket for the best performance in a model of this size, very similar to an F3A model, 2m span/length and 11 lbs. The Evo is certainly not the cheapest but its extremely reliable, I am still using the prototype motor from 2006 with over 1000 flights on it without a single bit of maintenance. The motor is the one place you don't want to cheap out on, in the high power world reliability drops significantly with the less expensive options and one reason why you dont see any of the cheap outrunner motors used in pattern anymore. Avoid inrunners for bigger motors as gearboxes become maintenance hogs requiring greasing every 50 flights.

Controller, the Schulze 32.80KA is well suited to the Evo. Jeti controllers work well also. Avoid Castle on large high pole outrunners as they have issues with their timing adjustments.

Batteries will need to be 10s, about 5000 mAh, or smaller if you don't mind shorter flights. I use the TP Prolite V2 5300 (x2 5s), not the cheapest but work very well and are one of the lightest for the capacity. If you have a couple of big chargers you can break them into 5s packs and charge them at 10A to cut the charge time to about 30 minutes.

Props are in the 21-22" range (22x12, 21x14 etc) at 6000-6200 rpm...you could maybe run a 23x10, or even 24x8, but I have not tried those as the pitch speed would be too low for F3A. With the 21x14 or 22x12 you will get about 3kW static, and unload about 10-15% in flight.

Icare-RC in Montreal has everything except the packs.

Re: What motor an controller?

Thanks a lot Chad that's exactly what I needed to know. Boy your not kidding expensive $1325.00 before taxes and shipping. I think maybe I'll have to wait till Santa comes next year to go electric. Chad I was surfing the net and found your website and there sure is a lot of great info there, well done. I have it bookmarked now.

Re: What motor an controller?

Well Chad, Christmas came early as I was able to sell all my small Axi and Hacker motors making it possible for me to order the new Plettenberg Xtra 30-9 Evo II from ICARE. I was just wondering which one of these Jeti ESC's I should use, Jeti 99 Opto or the Jeti 125 Opto? I'm just going to be fun flying(3D) and IMAC practice flying with the plane.
