I'm a die-hard 72mhz'er, but ...

If everyone had 2.4g, we wouldnt have to worry about the MAAC rule of 4 KM's between flying fields

EEEK, true but then you would still have to worry about policing it!

There will ALWAYS be 72Mhz radios around! There are too many in the world for there not to be! It only takes 1 accident to........... seperate topic

And out here we can drive 30 minutes before we find another person who flies rc!! That will be helpful for high pop. areas.

High population area + 2.4 Ghz only fields + 72Mhz radios + lack of policing =

higher insurance premiums in the future thus increased membership dues!

I think someone is bringing a dream to the table

Re: Start dumping the Old 72meg radios now....

I find the big issue is in the higher channel radio's. My 10X cost me a grand. To replace it 2.4 wise (and no I won't buy a module, I like my planes too much) will cost me 2 grand. There needs to be a cost effective way to change over before I'll go there. 72 works great, all it takes is for everyone to think about more than themselves for it to work.

Is there somthing I should know?? I have a 10x with a 72 and a 2.4 moduel, both work well and I have bought a Moduel and 9ch rec. for my 8103 JR radio.
What is it about your planes that keeps you from buying a moduel??

I have a mix of 2.4 and 72 Mhz stuff, and have had no trouble with any of them, it is the same for most guys, if you maintain your equipment, the less trouble it will give you.

Re: Start dumping the Old 72meg radios now....

Good point Bill - a mix is possible too.

One question I've had for a while now: with 2.4, what the heck is a "channel" anyway? It's all digital information contained in one packet on one RF signal - as far as I can tell the only basic difference between 7 and 9 channel 2.4 is firmware and switches. There's no reason why a DX7 coudn't be made to drive many more "channels"/functions.

Seems to me that manufacturers are capitalizing on the old analog mentality/experience to justify higher costs for more "channels".

I'm not going to sweat it too much and as always, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. That said, I may be a bit of a dinosaur but I am fully aware that this is the way of the future.....Ron

Me too, for my 9zap, 72, 72 synth, 2.4.
The only thing you are missing out on is reduced latency of a 2.4 GHz only system.

Re: Start dumping the Old 72meg radios now....

i ordered the 2.4 ghz module for my radio (thought my spectra was broken, it was fine) some of the extra stuff possible with 2.4 is neat, apparently the JR ones won't link if you are on the wrong model, so you don't dart one in from reversed servos. I like the module replacement, saves me about $100 because i don't need to change the whole radio. Optic 6 rocks
