Camshaft timing on a Saito FA-325R5D

Hello,

I bought a used Saito FA-325R5D engine. I was forced to disassemble it to replace the bearings which were completely rusted. The engine was seized in old castor oil so I worked hard to disassemble it. When disassembling the camshaft part, all the parts fell into my hands so that I was unable to take note or photograph the timing of each camshaft. I searched everywhere to find the necessary information but nothing.

Can anyone help me so I can perform the timing of the camshafts and reassemble my engine.

Re: Camshaft timing on a Saito FA-325R5D

The final check to see if you have it timed right is to put a tooth pick or straw through the glow plug hole so it stands vertical off the piston. Move the piston to top dead centre on the crossover stroke, not the compression stroke. Rock it back and forth and note that both valves are open just slightly the same amount. I have a small piece of aluminum fashioned so it wraps around the cam housing and a lip holds the cam gear from moving. This allows me to install the cam housing without the gear moving. One of these engines requires that you put your thumb on top of the piston and hold it down then install the cam gear with the dot down. At this point you can use the pushrods to hold the cam followers down and check the timing as above.

A bit late for this now, but it should be over in the general discussion forums, not classifieds.

Hi Grant,

I would be interested in that book if it is still available. I have one of these engines. Mine is brand new. It is sitting in my display case until I'm ready to mount it in my 1/5 scale Ziroli Stearman. I would love to a have a book for reference. If it is not available, please provide title, author, etc and I will search for it on Amazon.

Cheers,
