nitro plane yak 54 50cc
I bought this plane from nitroplane last year and was putting it together last winter.
I did have some issues regarding the way it was built (you get what you paid for!!), removable stabs were out of alignment, wing tubes were super tight forcing me to sand both the tube and where the tube goes into......and so forth. What I am getting at is this, last saturday was the first time I flew it for 2 flights having checked it all over. I was happy enough that I decided to fly it for the 3rd time for the last flight of the day. Unfortunately, it was bound to happen after I found out the cause. I am not into any 3D , just sports flying. At about 300 feet, both ailerons fluttered violently which I can see from afar, I throttled down to see if it would help. It did a bit so I brought it down to about 150 ft. As I tried to bring it in, it happened again, this time I could almost see that the ailerons were in full deflection, low airspeed. I slowed but the loss of control made the plane turn a high G turn to the left at about 60ft which folded the wing into a V , no control, just straight down it went. Nothing left of the front, but fortunately the wings were intact which showed me the cause of everything. The hardwares are ok, but where the horns bolts into was the problem, where it was just a hole for the horn lies a oblong shape gap with no solid reinforcement from inside. In hindsight, I remembered that where I installed my horn for the wing servos, I felt that it was hard enough but not hard like where there is a dowel inside for the horns to be drilled into. The ailerons just fluttered itself off the horn causing the crash. I learned from this mistake. I look at it as my mistake not checking that but for anyone in our forum who may have the same plane or any plane from nitro, check it out and make sure this does not happen to anyone......my loss your gain. slash60 |

Re: nitro plane yak 54 50cc
Man, I have to agree. Had the same kind of thing happen to me a week ago Monday. I had bought a foamie Extra330 off another club member and had to fix a few (!) things before trying it out.
Plane had a tendency to flick off on one wing or the other if I started honking on it at anything but full tilt airspeed. Made for some entertaining moments. Anyway, decided to go for a 3rd flight after trying to get the thing to land where I wanted, rather than where it felt it liked best. Plane started porpoising violently and on the 3rd the wing came off. Plane pretty much bit the dust, but at least the systems were salvageable. When I went to pick up the pieces I found the plastic block the wing pins lock into had been glued to the front of the fuse WITH SILICONE!!!!!!!!!! True, you get what you pay for. Starting to wonder, as I've been seriously looking at the bare bones NitroPlanes Catalina. |

Re: nitro plane yak 54 50cc
For the price of their planes and heli, I would say that they are competitive but just be careful when you do get them. Check everybit of connections, horns , hinges and even firewall as they tend to use some kind of aliphatic glue that is not that strong. Also on to where the horns are attached. I learned the hard way and it was ouch on the wallet having to spend so much for the shipping which went thru ups.
I would probably try to obtain a second plane via the regular hobby shop, look for bargains from other fliers. The plane flew nicely but the construction left a lot to be desired. Just my opinion......I might try to rebuild the yak having two good wings and 1/3 of the fuse. slash60 |

Re: nitro plane yak 54 50cc
Buddy of mine has (err, had) the same plane but his experience was regarding the control arms on BOTH elevator halves.
One of the things he didn't check was how well the little securing bolt and nut were attached on the control arms. Not very well as he found out. Maiden flight, was up for about 2 minutes and all of sudden, it turned turtle and in nose first, like a bullet. Trash one plane. He's gonna get another though as it flew so well from the get go. But this time he'll be a bit more thorough on checking everything he can get his hands on. |
