Elec Canadian grumman tracker

I started to build this plane from an old set of plans, dated 1976. Originally designed for control line, I redesigned it for electric RC.
So far it has been quite a challenge, and I know theres many more to come. Wingspan is 69 1/2", fuselage is 38", a short coupled little beast!
Iam currently waiting for servos for the landing gear and nose wheel steering.
I will ad pics to try to show the progress.
I built my own main wheel struts to try to copy the Tracker originals, they are kind of unique. I used Robart scale wheels but hink they may be too heavy (possibly at little large at 3" too). flytwice

Re: Canadian grumman tracker

Very nice. I like it. I think the gear looks great!! If you are flying off grass, you might need the 3".

How will you set up the rudder trim? Will it be more complicated, than really being necessary?

It will certainly be unique. Keep up with the pictures.

Elec Re: Canadian grumman tracker

Hi Daren: Welcome aboard! I built the split rudder to be functional with two servos. Then I was advised that the front rudder section is only used in a emergency, or can be pilot controlled for severe crosswinds. I'm leaving mine split and operational.
I intend to have dropping torpedoes too if I have enough channels (I have 9). Lots of things to figure out at this point.
I''l try to get close to plane 557 as it was on the Bonadventure. I hope to be built this under 8lbs and run it on 3S. I'll post a couple of more pics from yes/today. Stopping now to take a break.
What you see here weighs 26.5 ozs, is that good? flytwice

Re: Canadian grumman tracker

Sweet! I remember the Trackers coming over from CFB Summerside to shoot approaches here in Moncton. Loved the growl/rumble of those radials!

The split rudder was for single-engine operations. Without it, the aircraft was pretty much unmanageable if an engine failed.

Re: Canadian grumman tracker

Is 3S going to be enough for a 8lb airplane? Or is that 3S for each engine?

Are you going to do the folding wings?

Keep up with the pictures!!

Re: Canadian grumman tracker

Very cool. I remember them well from my youth as they flew over the house all the time, and my dad was on the Bonaventure in the mid 60's too.
There are trackers at the Shearwater and Halifax museums, I can take some close up pics if you need for details, depending on how detailed you want to get.

Elec Re: Canadian grumman tracker

CF105: I am aware now that the split rudder was an emergency use. Right now two servos work from the rudder channel, so each one turns a few degrees, say 15. I may change it so the front movable panel is on a separate switch if I have an open channel available.
Daren71: Sorry this will not have folding wings. The scale of the plane makes it very difficult to fit a mechanism into the wing. I have no idea how to do the fold either! The motors I've selected spin a 12/8/3 blade Emp prop to 450 watts, so 2 x 450 = 900 watts total power. I think 112.5 watts/lb would fly the plane fine if the weight is 8lbs.
vinver: thanks for the offer of pictures, I'll keep it in mind.
Tonite I worked on the torpedoe bay doors, man, getting them to work is going to be fun (not)-hehe.
Thanks all for the encouragement. flytwice

Re: Canadian grumman tracker

Very interesting aircraft. Nice to see some old school building (and not just assembly!)
Since you are powering this with an electric setup the chances of a one engine out emergency are greatly reduced. I have a twin Mustang (F-82) that I kitbashed from two Top Flight .60 size kits. I have Zenoah G-20's on there now but I am seriously thinking of going electric for any future twin.
