Re: Canadian grumman tracker
Hi Jim15256/ Danagaras:
I'd say I had no idea what I was getting myself into -hehe, but thats not quite true. It is a rarely built bird. Until one year ago, I had no idea that Dehavilland built 100 of these birds for the Canadian military. Dangaras, with a wingspan of 69 1/2", and fuselage length of 38", it does have quite a bit of wing. The Tracker does not really fit the normal warbird category. The real one flew at 150 kts cruise and topped out at 225 kts. By most warbird standards, its a slowpoke. I'm working hard at keeping the weight down, right now the fusealge is 26.95ozs with one more servo to install. The 3548-800 motors weigh 6.15ozs each. Esc's are 3 1/2 ozs for the pair. I intend to go over the landing gear before installation. I have Robart scale wheels, while they look wonderful, they are very heavy. I may change them out. Right now each complete main gear assly is 5.6ozs, I'm sure the wheels are more than half of that! Progress has been slow the last couple of days, I'll post some pics soon. flytwice |

Re: Canadian grumman tracker
Finally, I got the torpedoe bay doors done, they seem to wrok great. Spent most of the day today to get this far, designing the system so it didn't interfere with other systems. Now I need some torpedoes so I can build the servo/ release mechanism. Once that is done, I can either skin out the fuse or start the wing. flytwice

Re: Canadian grumman tracker
Know any rocket guys? A torpedo is basically an underwater rocket (in shape anyway). All you need is a blunt nose cone, paper tube, maybe a transition at the aft end, and a set of fins. The biggest challenge might be finding parts that match the plane's scale.

Re: Canadian grumman tracker
If you figure out the scale size torpedo then you can look on parkflyerplastics or carve n sand one out of pink foam...

Re: Canadian grumman tracker
Thanks for the ideas guys. Parkflyer does have a torpedoe, 8" x 7/8". The rocker tubes are also an avialable option. Never thought of pink foam! Another possibility!
I goofed up a little today, spent some time sheeting in the fuse, then realized I have no plan to install linkage to elevators!!! D'ohhh. I have NO plan yet, maybe I'll sleep on it -hehe. I'm also looking for a picture of the style and type of wing mounted depth charges our Trackers carried on patrol. So far no luck. I searched the internet for about an hour last night, but just got confused, one blog suggested a Mk54 depth charge, another claimed the same thing was a torpedoe!! More digging required for sure. flytwice |

Re: Canadian grumman tracker
Wow. Nice build thread so far, Flytwice.
I will definitely be following this one

Re: Canadian grumman tracker
Thanks Max: It is proving to be quite a challenge, thats for sure. The elevator with its 10 degree dehidral each side is proving to be a difficult setup to get a servo to. I think I have an idea, but won't know until I try it.
With scratch building, sometimes that the way it goes!! hehe. One step at a time, right! flytwice |

Re: Canadian grumman tracker
Work is progressing, I have worked on the Grumman every day. It one of those places where you don't see much for the effort, tho. I have installed the torpedoe release, sheeted in the back of the plane. The elevator servo dilema has been sorted, need to machine some parts.
I've also ordered the torpedoes, 6 bombs to convert to depth charges, and 2 9 cyl 3 1/2" radials. I was notified today they are on theri way ( pretty good service considering I ordered them late last night). Thats Parkflyer Plastics if your interested! Radar dome/ tail hook built and attached too. Weight stands at 30.2ozs. Here is some pics of the plane now, flytwice |

Re: Canadian grumman tracker
A little more progress to report. Windows are in, the side bubble windows where lots of fun. Elevator linkage and all sheeting on rear is done. I still have one more servo (for nose wheel steering) to install, it should be here any day now.
I started cutting wing rib and nacelle patterns, A fellow flyer (thanks Ken) used Profili to get the right Naca wing profiles. I am doing a total redesign of the nacelles to accomodate retracts. I must remember to make on left and one right pattern sets. Here's a couple of pics of where the build is now. flytwice |
