Re: Where Does Everybody Go?....
Just a comment her about what my situation was as some time in my life cycle. During high school I flew control line. When I graduated from there, even though I had an aircraft in the basement of my parent's house, I was off to College. There was not opportunity to build or fly. After graduation from college, came a full time job and an apartment. No space to build or area to fly. Then I met my wife and was married, raised a family. 30 years later, even though the kids had no interest in flying models, even though I tried some building during those times, I got back to model aircraft. When the kids had finally moved out for the final time, I turned 50, had quit smoking, my mother gave me $500 for stopping. My wife asked me what I wanted to do with the money, and I said that I wanted to get back to model aircraft and buy a transmitter and receiver. She said good. That was 19 years ago. So after a 30 year absence, I returned to modelling, kit building, and even a couple of scratch built models.
As an instructor, I have seen students get theri wings and then disappear. Usually, the disappearance is due to getting a drivers license, and involvement with girls. On one occasion I had a person come up to me and ask if I remembered who they were, it was a former student, who had gone on to graduate in aeronautical engineering, and was now working at Pratt and Whitney, in the jet engine division. He expressed an interest in getting back into the hobby again after his absence from modelling.

Re: Where Does Everybody Go?....
I started out in RC in 1960. 6 of us ended up buying our own field in 65, after getting kicked out of everwhere we went. Pretty well got out of it in 70 when I started up a small motor business. Carried that on till 90 when I retired. and got back into RC seriously. I like the foamy type stuff as it's great to experiment with and change, as opposed to built up balsa or glass stuff which takes much time to build. Much water under the bridge as far as building materials go since 60, as well as the electronics.

Re: Where Does Everybody Go?....
Shaggy,
Although there is logic to let those play politics who wish to,there is also a danger. There are those who feel they know better than others but wind up costing clubs fields and members.I have recently heard of a few clubs who have lost participation of members for things like field days or finding and building new fields. Is it really worth it to treat a hobby like some sort of career or business? Is it really worth it to act in such a manor to tick off the land owner and cost your club your field? Or even try to ruin other clubs with the same type of attitudes? After battling members like this for years,I had to step back.As much as I love this hobby,I'm looking to find a way to enjoy going to the field again and avoid the BS of certain members while helping the executive protect the interests of the majority. Re: Where Does Everybody Go?....
I was hot 'n heavy back in the 80's, then had to put it away when I got into aviation full time. There simply was no way to drag everything out into the bush and at the end of a 90 hour week there was no energy for anything else.
Luckily the SPRCF club is still going strong. It is nice to show up for invitationals and see a few familiar faces remain. Once back I think the biggest shock for me were the system improvements. The basic radio features have been upgraded and the flip to 2.4 actually makes things easier for us that remain on 72MHz. Regardless of that the biggest sea change has been with electric power. Back then there was absolutely no way you would ever get a 600 or larger size heli off the ground with batteries and a brushed power system. I still fly nitro and can state I would pit many of my mid 80's motors against what is offered now. The 40 size SF and FSR's will run hard all day and still be ready for more and although less sophisticated looking those Fox pumps are true performers. p.s. What I can't figure out is how I could fly all day on a 400MAh NiCad flight pack and now don't feel comfortable hauling anything less than 15-1600 to the field.

Re: Where Does Everybody Go?....
Hey Coug .... I can relate to that ...... I just re-cycled some 500/600/800 ma NiCads .... and as far as flying all day .... back then I recall planes had at most 4 servos ( probably around 45oz ) unlike the hi-torque 120oz + we use today .... and doubling up the servos for Aile/Ele (or more) ... Flaps/Gear etc etc .... so 600 ma would do for an hour of stick time .... till your Tx battery went low ....
My comfort level is 2000ma (for both 4 or 5 cell) ps: also if you were running a .61 size engine ... that was top of the hill ...

Re: Where Does Everybody Go?....
I'm not totally in agreement on the old verses new "ENGINES" Back in the early 80's to 93 I flew Webra speed 61's and YS 61's on pipe and was top of the pile. My current OS 55 AX on stock muffler will out haul any of those old 61's in the same old airframes I brought out of the attic when I got back into this hobby in 2007 after a brief 14 yr distraction

Re: Where Does Everybody Go?....
Most people in this hobby/recreation have a healthy attitude -- they do it because they like it, time and money permitting. I remember back in the 1980s when I first started that one of the ongoing topics in clubs and at the national level was keeping people beyond a year or two, and the words "instant gratification" were bandied around even then.
Life today (that's three decades on from when I started) has a lot more distractions, so that is a major factor in keeping people. Plus life in general has changes and there are things that increase in priority, and other things drop back in the pecking order, some never to come to the forefront. Like some other posters, I almost left the hobby because of club politics and shifted to a club that didn't have that problem. I also had family and work priorities plus lack of time. I'm still around, and planning to put in a lot more hours of flying this summer. |

Re: Where Does Everybody Go?....
I have answered this question from my perspective indirectly in another thread that got moved to "unrelated topics" titled "other hobbies & interests.
I have dabbled in model airplanes in one form or another since I was a child, likely always will though maybe not always RC or on this forum!

Re: Where Does Everybody Go?....
Hi
I don't post that often. Usually have nothing to contribute. I belong to MAAC and have sence 1999, I have belonged to several clubs. but I do not make it out that often due to many reasons, distance from my house. instructor scheduling, commitments on the begginers days (or crap weather when i was available) I paid my membership for the L.I.F.T. but have did not make it out last year due to timing and work. and so far have not been able to get out this year due to my new unplanned employment change that has me working nights, its hard to be awake at 9:30am when your shift stars at 8pm and goes for 10.5 hours.. after typing this its like its not ment to be. But I do read 90% of the rccanada posts, I do fly an indoor Heli almost every day. in the summer im in the back yard hovering around my Blade SR, or cp, (I have really good neighbours who think its cool and dont mind if i accidently overfly the fence) and on a calm morning i can be found flying my electric club, or park zone 210. I find it relaxing after a night shift to go out on a quiet calm day and fly around in the summer. I have several projects on my work bench, and like every other year, hope this summer i can join a club and get my nitros in the air and meet some people to fly with. if not i will still appear to be not in the hobby. but really i am. |
