battery question

I was using 350mah 2 cell (7.4v) lipos in my indoor foamy. I tried a 500 mah 2 cell, which to my understanding should give the same power but longer duration.

But, the power is MUCH increased - with the 350, I can barely hover even with a fully charged battery. With the 500's, I can easily hover, and climb out of a hover for near 2X the flight time.

Battery type is Flitepower lite for the 350mah, and Great Hobbies branded cells for the 500 mah.

I dont want to use my 350's anymore!!

Why would the same voltage not give the same power? Culd it be that the 350's dont have the current capability of the motor I am using? (the 350's were recommended by Fancy Foam for the motor I am using, one of the AXI ones)

Re: battery question

Along with total MAh capacity, there will also be a "C" rating, which gives the percentage of pack capacity in output current, (power).

Even if both the 350 and 500 MAh packs have the same C rating, the larger will be able to supply more current, hence your ability to pull harder. The only offset will be the fact larger capacity packs generally weigh more, so you have to balance those two factors.

It sounds like you lucked out there.

Re: battery question

Ahhh that makes sense.

The 350's are only 20C, with 30C burst and the 500's are 50C.

thanks!

Re: battery question

What exact motor are you using? I have the 2204 which the evo 350 were almost useless till I up graded to a battery that can handle the load required by the motor It swings a gws 9x5dd prop. I run the 2cell rhino 460 with great results.

Re: battery question

For that exact motor combo I am running a rhino 360 2cell 22g for my 3d/free-style planes. And I just put together a vrolet f3p and am using a hyperion 240mh 25c battery that is 17 grams and still these packs deliver the needed juice to fly. My 3d flying style is using more power and more full throttle burst than the f3p plane. That is why I use a little bigger pack.
I see your 500 is 30 grams. I have also used my 460 packs on the axi 2203 and felt the difference. I keep my flights to 6 min and the 360 are not showing any signs of letting up. Unnecessary weight IMO to run anything bigger. But you fly what you have.

Re: battery question

Bryan,
In my "blue foamy" I dont really notice the extra 8 grams.

But flight performance is insanely better!

The 350 flitepowers were originally bought for my vantage with the smaller AXI motor, but they also recommended them for this motor.

I will stick with the 500's...

Re: battery question

Hi Andrew - the secret is in the internal resistance/impedance of the cells - a cell with more capacity won't sag so much under the same load and, certainly one with a greater xxC rating has a lower internal call-it-which-you-will and will also not sag so much - you've noticed a considerable improvement because of these two factors! QED.
Have fun!

Re: battery question

What you maybe also noticing is the imbalance of the pack and or the pack lossing it's capacity and starting to slow down and not up to the job anymore. Do you balance the pack periodically? Were they better when new?

I dont think they are as good as they were last season. I dont abuse my packs either, I charge at 1C only.

I do balance charge them every few charges with my flitepower balancer which goes in between my triton II charger and the pack.
