any other guys still dabbling with 1/2A stuff?

I love the smaller planes, reminds me of all the stuff I built when I started near 30 years ago.

I dont have enough time to fly my .049 - .061 stuff due to too many other interests, but to day I grabbed my Ace Whizard and my RCM (plans built) Scooter II and went out on one of the windiest days yet this summer!

Had a flight each, was interesting to say the least but its amazing these small, 1 lb planes can fly and remain controllable in 30km gusts (according to the weather network website for Timmins).

I have a throttled Cox TD 049 in my Ace whizard and a converted to throttle (with an AP carb I drilled an air bleed hole in) Norvel in the SCooter. Both ran great without any adjustments, and I havent run them in probably 3 or 4 years.

I need a calm night to go out again, and have some 1/2A fun...

AJC

PS i have 3 other small (.020 to .049) planes as well, lots of fun!

the Whizard

and the Scooter MKII

I've got a Herr 1/2A Cub with a 400 electric motor and feather servos, but I haven't flow it in a while. It's like my big Cub's mini-me.

nice - Herr makes a great kit.

But man, thats near sacrilegious ... electric! Yikes! That poor plane needs a messy, noisy glow engine!

I've been working on a 'Half A' Lanier Shrike for a couple of years now, the plan is ultimately for it to be a very speedy electric airframe....maybe this winter for sure if I stay home...Ron

In fact, I agree. I had intended to make this a nitro flyer - but can you still get .049 engines?? I'm not even sure what would be a good choice for this plane...manual says .049 to .061 engine, but it's only a 20oz Cub.

If and when you are ready... I can probably hook you up I have a box of engines... the trick is to get a good throttling 1/2A. For the cub, I would say a Norvel 061 would be fine as well as many others.

1/2A is all about getting good performance from somewhat fussy engines - and when things are runnign well its really neat!

I am glad to see more than a few of "us" still at it!

Ron - you need to drop a hot cyclon or something similar in that shrike and forget the batteries

Re: any other guys still dabbling with 1/2A stuff?

Well, I'm amazed that you can still buy Cox engines, and that the Cox name now belongs to a company in William's Lake BC. $16 for a new .049 die cast engine. Of course, they still sell the Baby Bee .049 which is more like $50.

I had a Cox .049 on my old Mustang Control Line airplane when I was a kid. Fussy little engine but when it ran, it ran great. Might have to give it a go...
