What do those number relate to?

Feet?
Yards?
Meters?
Peanuts?
Bowls of jelly?

Ultimately, the distance required will be determined by several factors, including the airplane design and its take off ability, the ability of the pilot and obstacles surrounding your field.

Don't forget that once the plane gets into the air, it needs to climb out and avoid any obstacles. That takes a bit of space too.

And usually a bit more space without obstacles to get to the landing strip.

Re: take off and landing

Not only that, but you have to be able to hit that strip everytime. Can be a hard thing to do for a seasoned pilot sometimes, nevermind someone learning to fly.

Re: take off and landing

go up with a trained pilot the first time ,he can show you the ropes ,you may be supprise how difficult it is even with help.you want at least a 300 foot run way & 50 foot wide, minimum ,and that would be tough with most planes but possible with a slow moving trainer ,with the wind straight down the shoot .if this is your first time please get help .I can tell you first hand that learning by your self can be costly . Re: take off and landing

Get an experience pilot to check the sizes of your property for you. Keep in mind that take off is optional BUT landing is mandatory.

Cheers,

Will

Re: take off and landing

Hi there,

The fact that you don't know how much room it takes to lift off with your trainer tells me that you're not very experienced.

If you do take off from your property, chances are you will likely crash. Whether you just torque your airplane, or hit yourself or one of your neighbors, is a matter of how lucky you are.

Please seriously consider seeking instruction from another pilot. As stated, Ottertok is on Manitoulin, and he might give you a hand. He is a great guy, but I don't know whether he is into instructing or not. He has helped me out in the past.

I was in the same boat as you (bought a plane, itching to fly from my own property) but I'm glad I got an instructor to take me up for those first few flights, it definitely saved me from smashing that plane!

Cheers,
Ben

Re: take off and landing

The other question would be what is beyond that distance?
Will you be buzzing the neighbours with your precision landing practise?

Re: take off and landing

It's been covered in great depth everywhere, but remember that you're flying at your own risk. MAAC insurance does not cover you if you are flying from your own property.
