I come from a "hands on" background and love to experiment. I dont think there are too many kits out there that cannot benifit from some tweaking and/or design changes. I firmly believe this is a hobby to try new ideas and push the limits. I would be pretty bored myself if all I did was build kits exactly the way the plans tell me to... whats life without a bit of experimenting, trying something new? Its called KITBASHING and it is a lot of fun

Of course, I also assume the builder has a bit of practical experience gained only by building a few kits in the first place.

I still think that most of my knowledge that I have came from trying new things, doing things "my way" (whether the outcome was good or bad I still learnt from it) and when I see others saying "build it the way it was supposed to be built" I feel the need to say "hey - keep your options open, and maybe just maybe you will make things better, or learn something". I think many kits are somewhat dated in there design and flyability. Just look at flying surfaces for instance. If the fellow said "I want to make my ailerons 3 times bigger" what would have said? No, they were designed that way so keep them that way? I would say GO FOR IT and tell us all how it went.

You all should know I am not for a meaningless debate and/or trying to stir the pot - I honestly feel like this hobby is only pushed ahead by the guys who try new things and different things. If we all just built stock kits where would we go? How do you start designing you own planes - I think bashing a few kits first is a good way to go.

JMHO!
