The Ultimate Compliment

A friend of Mine, whom I had known for many years, had a passion for airplanes and always wanted to fly RC.

We grew apart and I saw him only once or twice a year.
Last year we got a chance to meet again and the subject got around to model aircraft. He told me he was interested in getting into it some day but it was so expensive.

I told him what was he waiting for? He was already past 50 and not getting any younger. I asked him how much longer would he wait before he got into the hobby? I told him to add up the cost of one of his vacations and compare that to the cost of RC. I think I finally convinced him, because after that day he followed my advice to get the best radio he could afford (DX7) and a BNF Supercub. He bought both of these items from our Local Hobby Shop. And he didn’t spend *that* much on his initial investment

That was at the end of August last year. Since then, we have flown together twice a week whenever the weather permitted us. By October, he had purchased an HK450 to learn to fly helis, which he did at our indoor sessions all winter. Having seen how much fun indoor is, he went and bought a Vapour and Blade MSR for indoor as well.

He has joined our club and has attended several club events. He even came to our swap meet and bought a PNP Formosa from one of our club members.

We still fly twice a week.

Last Friday, we made plans to fly on the weekend. He is working on his wings test. I said to him
“lets fly on Sunday, but lets not work so hard on the lessons, lets just get together and have fun”

To which he replied “Max, you make life fun, thanks to you”

I was surprised to hear him say that. I asked him what he meant.

He said that since he discovered RC and with my coaching and guidance, his enjoyment of his life has increased dramatically. Every day he looks forward to flying his supercub at the local park, or taking lessons with me on his more advanced planes at the club field. His social network of friends has increased thanks to all the friends he has made through flying model airplanes, and his wife says he is in a better mood at home now that he gets out and socializes more. (as apposed to moping about the house as he used to do in the past)

He concluded by saying he can’t thank me enough for what I have done for him and his enjoyment of life.
We shook hands and parted company, both looking forward to the weekend when we can do some more flying together.

I drove away with the biggest smile on my face

Re: The Ultimate Compliment

Hi Max,

You have to be congratulated for making someone's day just a little better and introducing him to the hobby.

This hobby isn't about the biggest and the best, or even the pursuit of being highly skilled, it is about the socializing and making friends with people having a common interest.

Many times I go to the field, set up my equipment, get a flight in and just sit around and talk about the hobby, and anything else that comes to mind. I spend a few hours at the field, but only a small amount of time in the air.

I'm sure you got just as much out of teaching him, as he did in learning.

This is a great hobby for all to enjoy.

Thanks for sharing.

Fly4Fun,

Wayne

Re: The Ultimate Compliment

I bought 2 Director type lawn chairs for the good wife and me. She loves going to the field, sitting and S*itting as much as I do. Sociallizing is the best part. Heck I just spent 40min on the phone with a flyer from the Gap (Sask).

Life is good, 10 days to go to the next Fun-Fly, and back. Sure hope it dosn't Snow!

Re: The Ultimate Compliment

Dale, that was a "technical support" call! We just get side-tracked talkin' about "Life"!

Max you sound like someone I would like to meet! Dale is my instructor, I'm sure Dale would agree that your student (spelled "friend") has got to be a better pupil than I am! I talk way too much!!! Right Dale?

Re: The Ultimate Compliment

Well done! - It just echos one of my favorite stock statements about the hobby;

"This is a Social Club, and by the way... we also fly Airplanes."

Re: The Ultimate Compliment

That's about the best review of why RC is a great hobby that I've ever read.
