2.4 Interference near airport?

Howdy,

We fly about 5 miles from a nearly dead airport, traffic wise, but it does have a manufacturing (Aircraft) base there...

A few people have had 2.4 glitches only in that area, where the plane will dive or become unresponsive at higher altitudes (3-400 ft) and then recover, or at least a few did.

We are flying mostly parkflyers, Electric, Under 45" wingspan.

Was wondering if anyone knows of anything radiating from the airport can interfere with a Spektrum 2.4 system? Radar? Strong Wifi System operating on 2.4?

Thanks!

Re: 2.4 Interference near airport?

If you check on youtube, search range checking 2.4 dsm2, you will find a clip where they strapped a reciever to a small private airplane and measured range. The results were over 7km and no interferance.
As for wifi, one of our fields has a cell tower very close. No troubles.
Maybe the pilot should run a dedicated RX battery???

Re: 2.4 Interference near airport?

One of the guys was using a seperate Ubec, and still had the problem, would using a completely seperate RX batt make more of a difference?

I would say it might be a problem between the ground and radio but these guys are good pilots and it happened to more than one person, on different planes.

Thanks for your input!

Re: 2.4 Interference near airport?

Some doppler radar works around the 2.4 gHz frequency. Unlikely at a small airport. Why don't you just ask the manufacturer if they are using high power 2.4 for anything?

That was my next step... just wondering if anyone had any ideas.. It DOES sit under a larger airports airspace, so it might be doppler or primary radar. I doubt Secondary Radar would case these problems?

Re: 2.4 Interference near airport?

Sometimes communications companies use low power 2.4-2.6ghz data links to serve remote sites where Tel-line carriers or fibre optics are not installed or cost effective. Systems can be
temporary . I do not know if these spread spectum signals will over come your receivers .
Maybe on a drive by the airport take notice of any beam antennas /micro- Wave dish
pointing towards your field.

Hey Wayne, Glad to hear it! Nice to see them back in action, they would have been sitting in my closet still .

I'll take a look for dishes on my next drive by... would hate to lose the field, because it is perfect!

Thanks!

Re: 2.4 Interference near airport?

Don't forget, radar is line-of-sight, just like most radio transmissions. Under your 3-400 feet you're probably below the horizon for a radar at the other airfield. This is just speculation, but the fact that your interference seems to be altitude dependent certainly points towards interference coming from over the horizon.

Re: 2.4 Interference near airport?

I've flown on 2.4Ghz (Spektrum) fairly close to a primary radar, PAR (Precision Approach Radar), VOR, NDB, etc... and none of those had any impact on the receivers. The only guys who had issues where flying dirt cheap single conversion 72Mhz receivers and even then only had a short glitch every now and then.

As for the 2.4Ghz point to point link, it's a possibility. However, they are usually always on. Your TX would detect it and reject the offending frequency, selecting an empty frequency pair.

Is there any other radio towers or high power lines close by (within 0.5 km)?

Re: 2.4 Interference near airport?

nothing really of any height in the area, I believe...

This happened with both the Spektrum TX/RX and Hobby City TX/RX on the same day, and he was using a seperate BEC.

Thanks for all the ideas! I'll take a drive by and check it out!
