running my Zenoah G20 in hot humid cond.

Hi all,

mounted my Zenoah G20 on my new Taylorcraft.....at first didnt put the venturi on the carb so it would be hidden in cowl. It was running rough at idle so I decided to put the hole in the side of the cowl and install the venturi.

Seemed to still be running a little rough but its been HOT and HUMID out.....my 3rd flt she almost went down. This thin hot air, not developing enough power for takeoff and I just barely limped into the air.....had a stall about 20' up but checked fwd to recover and I limped away.....enough to come around and land safely, but it was a CLOSE call.

Re: running my Zenoah G20 in hot humid cond.

How new is the engine, (ie how much run time so far) and what prop are you using?

I have three of them. Two have run for many flights on a 120 size ultra stick.

#1, they take quite a while to break in before you can get full power, and also a good, reliable idle (at least several hours run time).
#2, in my own experience, I have found the engine really likes a 15x6 prop. A 16x6 can be run, but I think it likes the 15x6 better.

Re: running my Zenoah G20 in hot humid cond.

Maybe find someone who is good at tuning small engines, and watch everything they do. Listen to the engine and the tuner. Most people can make 'em run, (any engine) few are really great at tuning.

Knowing what a well tuned one sounds like is the first step!

I also find that a seemingly small turn of the carb needles (especially the low end) can indeed make a big difference in the running. Make adjustments in SMALL steps and run a tank through it to see how it is before making another adjustment.

Re: running my Zenoah G20 in hot humid cond.

howdy gents.......its prob about my 5th season running it. This is the biggest a/c I've put it on. I have a 16x8 prop on it......perhaps I should go with the 16x6.

Today I reset the carb L and H settings......now it was much cooler today but it ran much better!

I took it out tonight for a couple flts.

Re: running my Zenoah G20 in hot humid cond.

Why not try a 15 or 16 x6?

I really think the 16x8 is too much prop, and Not letting the engine get to its happy rpm.

Re: running my Zenoah G20 in hot humid cond.

Acav8r,I have 3 g20's with no issues,I agree with AJcoholic,Try a 16/6 or 15/6.I fly with 16/6's but have used 15 as well. One thing you can do is fly the aicraft with no cowling once your engine is set.if it runs andhandles well in the air then try the cowling. If you have a problem then you should have more exit at the rear of the cowling. As well make sure your ignition battery is fully charged.check the manual for proper ignition module instalation.I install mine over 2 small braces of wood and 2 fastwraps so there shoild be adequate ventilation for the ignition.I hope this is usefull for you.cheer's.

Re: running my Zenoah G20 in hot humid cond.

Thx all for he tidbits of info.....going to prob increase the exit vent in the cowl to allow a better airflow and perhaps try the bench 16x6 prop......stay tuned!
