Ken Coleman CAP10 3D Trainer Build
I decided to get into indoors flying this year and am gong to restart a previous project: Ken Coleman's CAP10 Trainer. I got the kit seven years ago, and it's been cycling between the storage racks and the workbench several times. Now I'm getting serious.
Slow flying, aerobatic, and looks different from the usual flock without being a full fuselage build. I looked the kit over and I'm going to rebuild the fuselage and wings (ailerons are OK) as the wood is peeling back from the edges and looking totally ratty, even for some of my older TLAR projects. http://www.skyhooks.ca/CAP10.htm Ordered a new looks-equivalent (size, kV rating, prop size and RPM are close) motor, speed controller and lipo packs (2s 360mah 20C Turnigy packs) from you-know-where and they should be here within the next week or so. Have to check my supply of 9g servoes to see if I have enough or need to pick up some new ones. More to come, with pictures. Last edited by Guest; 09-22-2012 at 05:00 PM. Re: Ken Coleman CAP10 3D Trainer Build
Started on the build. Took the fuselage section and used it as a template for the new fuselage side.
Today was a day off from work so I took some time to do the 1/32 laminations on the bottom and nose sections(three in all). Ken had suggested using epoxy for gluing, but I'm using Gorilla Glue. The first layer went on well with masking tape and now the second lamination is going on even faster. The motor and lipo packs are on the way from HK.... tracking link isn't working... |

Re: Ken Coleman CAP10 3D Trainer Build
For such a small plane, 9g servos seem overkill. I've used the 5g HXT500/SG50 but they are marginal for 3D... Poor centering and somewhat sloppy although they do seem to have enough torque.
I used some JR S185 high speed servos on my Ultimate Bipe 24" ws. Really nice servos but somewhat $$$ at $20 each. Good luck on the build! |

Hey did you try to copy the HK tracking number and paste it into Canada Post's tracking system? There's usually a dead band from when they "ship" it and when CP actually gets it in their system, but after that you should be able to see it on CP _and_ you can subscribe to email alerts from CP!
Here's their link: http://www.canadapost.ca/cpotools/ap...execution=e1s1 Looks like a fun build. I'm intriqued by the balsa edging on the foam. Newer models that'd probably wind up being 3mm flat carbon or something . Cheers, J

Re: Ken Coleman CAP10 3D Trainer Build
The latest effort has been to build the landing gear. Figured out what the laser-cut strips of 1/32 were for. They give a groove for embedding the pre-bent gear wire in place.
Had to make three pairs of the main blocks before I could re-read the instructions and understand what was supposed to happen and that I didn't have to create a slot in the strip by ntoching the sheet. General comment is that plans and instructions are not complete and leave gaping holes. Definitely not a glue part A to part B build. Test fit everything before committing to gluing things together, make the smaller components first, have spare wood and depron, and be ready to scrap a component if it doesn't work. So far, no desire to charge out and buy a Vapor and say "the hatche-E-double-hockey-sticks with it." But not something to be finished by tomorrow. Do have a goal of three weeks' time for completion. |

I'm interested in seeing how the build goes. And I wouldn't give up if it doesn't fly. There are lots of models in this size that you could try. From rubber powered models to the StevensAero micro kits. I've got an SA Skybuggy with Parkzone UM gear and an SE5a Bipe that I'm converting from rubber power to RC. Lots of fun! |

Re: Ken Coleman CAP10 3D Trainer Build
Tonight was more of a goof-off day. I'd glued a long stick to the back of the fin, and it's just slighty longer than the back of the fuselage. So, little bit of GG (Gorilla Glue) on the bottom of the fin and the wood strip, scrap off excess then onto the fuselage and position.
Next was digging the wheels and the washers and axle-end-fittingout of the plastic bag and putting them unto the axle. GThen dug out the GG once again and a tiny drop on the end of the axle as I pushed the end fitting into position. Not sure if the wheel will revolve freely but will wait for glue to dry thorouthly before I try fiddling. Next step will be putting the wheel pant piece unto the opposite side of the landing gear and gluing the wire into the slot. After that, I'll do the bending of the wing pieces to take the camber needed and add the landing gear ribs in the right place. |
