GWS P51

Mine has yet to fly; I sanded out the "panel lines" between the boiler plates, and sanded in some washout (apparently they tipstall), then covered it in tissue/polyurethane/Humbrol. I'm sure it will look great as it crashes (you haven't seen me fly!)...

I would suggest a GWS Slowstick for a trainer plane before a Mustang. It will last a matter of seconds.

You may think im crazy but wait till you here what im going to do next. I bought the plane ready to fly over E-bay for $11.00 so that’s why I bought the mustang. My plan is to make a flat-bottom
air foiled temporary wing out of balsa and tissue paper and mount it on the mustang like a bi-wing
it will give me all the lift at half the speed. When I learn to fly ill take it off. I have been making model airplanes for 13 years and im confidant it will work.

I have built 2 of these. I did the same thing, bought it too early, but the biggest mistake i made was building it too heavy. The plane will not tip stall if you keep it light and keep the throws low.

My first one weighed in at 17oz, it flew on the stock motor at this weight but it was a handfull and i crashed it several times. After beating it to death i purchased a new one.

I built the second one with no landing gear, no rudder servo. I used a 2s1p 1200 pack as power. This required hogging out some foam in the battery bay so the pack could be forced to the front. After paint my rtf weight was 12 oz. This plane flew on the stock motor wonderfully! Loops, rolls, outside loops, all possible when light. Landing was a simple and the plane could be slowed down no problems for landing in the grass.

my advice to you would be:

dont spackle, or mess with it at all. for 11 bucks what the heck.
use lipos
try for an rtf weight of 13oz or less. It will cruise at half throttle if light.
hand launch under handed with motor at about 3/4 throttle on stock setup.
small elevator control throws, i mean half of recommended in the book. If you have dual rates set up for book value and then half so you can go back and forth. The elevator will cause a snap roll if there is too much throw. I believe this is what people are calling "tip stall" but it isnt, its just very pitch sensitive. You will have great success with a light plane. I would learn to fly with confidence first then, when your ready, buy a Laser Arts P-51 and build it too look scale. Frankly the GWS birds where made for people to learn cheaply on.....

my 2 cents for what its worth.
good luck.

Tlyttle : she sure looks pretty! Nicely done. Best of luck with your maiden.

I fore see a smoking hole in the ground.....lol. Good luck. Don't spend too much time on making the Mustang pretty as it will not stay that way for long, even if your idea works to some degree the Mustang will still see its fair share of damage.
