Help needed with JXD 339

I have a couple of small JXD 339 metal optically-controlled helis whose lights work and rotors turn but without enough power to lift the heli. I have tried new batteries and changing a suspect pinion gear but with no improvement. Has anyone seen this symptom before and is there a simple cure? I don't fancy changing motors.
