spars, balsa or spruce

Hi guys... When I am building my wings from plans, they dont really specify what the main spars in the wings should be, either balsa, or a hardwood, like a spruce etc... Is there different rules for .40 size planes as compared to the larger .120 size planes. I have heard different theorys, from my buddies at the flying field, but I thought I might ask you guys for your input,.. As usuall, thank you for all your help in advance....Joey...
