Top Flight paint

I phoned Hobby Wholesale the other day to buy some Monokote and the matching spray bombs to finish a plane and paint the cowl and wheel pants.
"They haven't made the paint for over 10 years" He told me, "It wasn't fuel proof anyway, no paint is fuel proof especially with gas."

Now I know the last part is pure BS but is the first part also?

Re: Top Flight paint

Didn't they Bullshit you. It is still in production and is very fuel proof, on of the best for glow fuel. All Canadian Hobby shops don't want to handle it because of the shipping problems. If you want paint that will come close to Monokote try Home depot.

Re: Top Flight paint

Thanks Mike. I highly suspected that was a load of pure male bovine rectal excrement! Why the heck don't they just tell us the truth? "We don't want the bother." Is lying so ingrained in our society that it's an automatic reflex? Good Lord!

Well sufficient for that!

I suspect that the Home Depot paint is not fuel proof but I will take a look at some of the colors next time I make the 5 hour trip to the city. Perhaps it could be clear coated with something else to make it fuel proof.

Re: Top Flight paint

So I sent Merv a PM and then went off to do some looking for this paint. according to my supplier it can not be shipped into Canada. Great Planes is my supplier on Monokote. GP does not even list the Lustrekote paint on their dealer site and looking on Tower Hobbies website it is not allowed to ship into Canada. I will give my rep a call on Monday and see what I can find out but I am suspecting it is due to labeling issues with our government, seems to be more and more of that lately with trying to get product across the border...

Re: Top Flight paint

You can clear coat the paint with Automotive Urethane clear Merv...just don't flood it as the solvent in the clear may attack the spray bomb paint....test spray a panel first to confirm compatibility.

A body shop could mix you some paint too but it could get pricey...

What colour are you looking for Merv?

Re: Top Flight paint

Flitecraft in Kitchener, Ontario has about 1dz or so cans of Lusterkote still around. Give them a call, maybe with luck they have the colour you need and can ship it to u.

Re: Top Flight paint

Lustrekote was perfectly safe for gas, if it did have a downside it was that it was not fuel proof for high nitro applications.

Problem with paints is that they cannot legally be shipped by mail or bus. They can only be legally shipped as dangerous goods with proper paperwork and labelling.

Merv, I sent you a PM.

Re: Top Flight paint

For a fuel proof, and nitro proof coating over water-based paints, Michaels stocks a spray on clear, Americana product, in gloss or satin. Stinks, but dries super quick, and works exceedingly well.

Re: Top Flight paint

Your local autoshop can mix for you a can of your color and add hardeners in it that will resist like a car's paint.
I did it a couple of times
Or you can put Cdn Tire auto paints with clear after.
