Re: Ziroli DC3 on floats
Here are some more pictures I took as screen shots from last DC3 on floats to be known in above pictures. In 2011 it was taken off the floats and have since been on the ground on it's landing gears and floats were damaged and they haven't been restored as yet according to various sites on the net. I am also trying to get intouch with it's owner and pilot to see if they can help with this project. Hoping to find actual drawings on how the floats were mounted to the nacelles and how struts were....
Good thing is that DC3 used Edo floats!!!

Re: Ziroli DC3 on floats
I had an aircraft mechanic supply me with drawings for my twin otter which did help a lot . sort of gave me some ideas to work with even though it was not 100% scale it really impressed most guys. I had a guy stop buy on his way back to Victoria ( where they are building new twin otters) and he was quite impressed and offered no negative comments on the difference. he worked for the factory in Victoria
building the TO 400 series. Sometimes with a model you may have to make a few slight changes as to make it totally scale mounting components may be too weak as a working model; just for an example. try and see if you can get copies of drawings would be best as good photos are hard to get unless you have access to the real McCoy and do it your self. Better go buy yourself a Sherline lathe and milling attachment. your gonna need it LOL |

Re: Ziroli DC3 on floats
This is what I love about doing these projects, you learn a lot about their histories and also other different variants. Here is something I bet not a lot of people know about, there was a glider version of Douglas DC3 designated as XCG-17.....

Welcome onboard Tonto82! This is great! least now I know I'm not the only one to be as crazy as this conversion project is.....lol I wasn't sure if CJM float retracts are capable of handling all the weight and loads of this model, good to know they are well capable off. What is your estimated weight as RTF for your model? What engines do you plan on using? I also like to see how you made gear doors base frames that would seal water tight, so when floating, no water will get into the gear bays...

Re: Ziroli DC3 on floats
hi sam, estimated wt 45-50#s with carbon 20 x 12 3 blade props. i had to move nacelles out 21/2 inches to accomodate bigger engines for prop clearence from fuse. still working nose gear doors but right now plan to leave slot for water to drain as i accelerate as doors will close after entering water

What is the distance between floats and your model. I am still waiting for authentic information on this before I will start planning what materials to use to make the struts and where exactly on nacelles and floats will they attach on to.
