price

the Taurus engine is not cheaper than the DA however; the DA$69 muffler is not a pitts wrap around like the Taurus, it is a side mount.

Taurus

Hi Jim,

They're built by a company named Southgate Aero in Michigan.

I came across them a couple of years ago because their engines were getting rave reviews on RCU.

Unlike the DA , it's a side carb, piston ported engine with CH auto advance ignition.

I then saw them at theToledo show first hand and talked to the owner and was very impressed with the product. I was looking for a 50cc engine and at the time the DA 50 was just being launched. Bill (the owner) was quite familiar with the DA design and without "dissing" the DA , sold me on the superiority of his product.

The main advantage was the double web forged crankshaft supported by 3 main bearings. This not only improves the durability but, also the smoothness of the engine. I have owned some other small gassers and this is definately the smoothest running engine that i've owned.

The radial mount is beautifully machined and distributes the engine loads better without the tendancy to twist the crank case like an engine on standoffs.

The prop hup is a single bolt unlike the odd 4 bolt pattern of the DA

All engines are hand built and individually tested and setup by Bill.

The service is great too, two summers ago , I drilled it through a tree showing off at the Oakville scale rally Bent the crankshaft. Sent it in for repair and Bill replaced the crankshaft and bearings for about $200. Turnaround time was about 3 weeks ( two of that was shipping)

The only thing I don't like about it is that u can not adjust the carb with engine running because of it's orientation.

I'm not sure what changes have been made in the redesign, a call to Bill would let u know, be warned, he may keep u on the phone awhile, the man LUVS engines

Mike, the website doesn't seem to work, do they make anything larger than the 52?

Thanx Mike,

Hey you forgot to mention that you got 1/2 a rubber tree wedged inbetween the mount and the firewall! that's go to help some with vibration dampening.

mount

Yeah it's hard to tell from the pic Jim but, the engine is actually mounted in my Byron Pitts on a Byron Mount.

It's quite a neat mount , basically it's reinforced plastic disc on a telescoping pole t that allows u to easily adjust the engine to firewall distance so that u can line up the cowl\spinner effortlessly.

Mike, sorry, I did not mean to suggest that the DA was cheeper or any better. Someone had asked the price of both engines and the price of the Taurus was posted. I just thought I would post the price of the DA50 and the DA Muffler as listed on the Desert Aircraft web page.
