Shipping Crate

Anyone have experience shipping large(ish) used planes? As a result of reading a couple hot threads on here I may opt to sell some or all my planes. And don't dare advertise "no shipping"!

Saskatchewan isn't exactly the hotbed for RC planes, more like a black hole, they come here and never leave again.

I guess a consideration is to having the planes arrive at their new owners place like they where when packed. From my area the bus is only 50 miles away, probably making it the cheapest way to ship.

Was thinking of building a framed box and sheeting it with door skins. This would allow padding and strapping to keep things where they won't wear of puncture.

Re: Shipping Crate

Door skin, 1x2 and an extra large bag of popcorn Brent. Settle the popcorn in well.
Buyer will hate you for it but the model will be safe.

Re: Shipping Crate

Never would have thought of that Bill! Just remembered STC (bus line) will be terminated in June(?) due to budget cuts. Hope Greyhound sets up to take over the depots.

Re: Shipping Crate

Have run across some good ideas in shipping large models in Rcgroups. .... think it was turbine jets they were building boxes for. Several had some good pictures as they built around the model. Most had split plug in wings . In any case some good ideas from idea guys down South had.

Re: Shipping Crate

Sadly Ron edited his post, it did address the major issue of shipping.

I have a couple planes in the 37% range that I want gone. Even with the rudder, wings and elevators removed it takes some volume for the box.

Re: Shipping Crate

The bus lines work for most planes but when they get too big try Manatoulin trucking .I had a 40% yak shipped pretty cheap . whenever I ship planes I make a block that mounts to the removed landing gear area and bolt that block to the side of the crate strap the tail wheel down with a zip tie. . this will secure the plane safely . smaller planes I strap the wheels to the side of the box with large plastic ties .I have shipped many and never had a problem , It's a ton of work though so I don't understand guys getting upset if you don't want to do it . It's a big risk too, the same guy bitching about guys not willing to ship will be the first guy to walk away if there is a problem and it's not easy to get your money back if it is deemed it was not packaged correctly. Or what if the guy claims it's not as stated and you have to ship it back this will all be on the seller. Easy for these guys to say your being lazy when they are taking no risk . I am not saying don't do it just be sure you tell the buyer there are risks and he is the one that will be taking them if he want's it shipped . what I would do is take pictures of the crate and packaging ,if the buyer thinks it good he now owns it regardless of how it works out. hope this helps cheers Roger

Re: Shipping Crate

Ironic is someone calling you lazy when you won't ship a plane you had to build for them.
