"Cooper's FAI fuel is an honest, true FAI legal fuel. Containing 20% by volume pure AA Grade castor and 80% clean, dry, pure (99.5% or greater) methanol. Absolutely nothing else is in this fuel, not even anti-foam agents."

I believe you need to mix pure methanol with castor oil 5 to 1. You can get methanol (methyl hydrate) from a paint store however the quality may not be perfect. I bought a 4l jug at Home Hardware but have yet to try it as fuel.

Good luck!

when I was running FAI in my big Moki, I was using Byrons (80% alcohol, 20% oil) I purchased through Flite Craft in Kitchener. I am sure any hobby shop carrying fuel can order you a case.

Home Depot Methyl Hydrate is 99.9% pure. A four litre jug wll cost about $9.00. Larger hobby stores usually carry US quarts of Sig castor.

There you go.

Synthetic oil can be used instead of castor. But that is not "True" FAI fuel.

ed,
you say that it is not "true" fai fuel,Synthetic oil can be used instead of castor.i,m just looking to run the engine on the % you suggested.will home depots methyl and walmarts Synthetic oil mixed to a 5 to 1 give me the desired level of operation my nelson is capable of outside the fact it is not a true fai fuel mix.
and just to get it straight the mix is 5 parts oil to 1 part methyl.
thanks,sean [/quote]

Check your dilution factors; 5 to 1 would give you 83.33% to 16.66%.
You want 4 parts to 1 part to give 80% and 20% and the oil should be the 1 part, not the other way round.

This is not correct.

To repeat Dave's post, 4 parts alcohol, 1 part oil.

Using synthetic oil will not affect engine performance. The fuel will burn a lot cleaner than castor based fuel. Gum and varnish will not build up in the engine with synthetic as it does with castor oil.

To run No Nitro fuel, engine head clearances have to be set correctly.

You mentioned a Nelson engine? without the correct head setting it will perform poorly.

ed,
whats a good source for nitro.
i knew something wasnt adding up.the whole idea of this post was to mix fuel for my nelson.
the idea of mixing comes from the fact a gallon of 5% costs around 22-25 bucks, the nitro level you suggest to run(60%) my nelson on.,i dont even want to price that at my local hobby shop.definetly a special order.
