BlitzRCWorks Silver P-38 Lightning Build Thread

Ok, the darkside won out and "made" me get this beautiful P-38. Actually the retracts & exchange rate did it. I already have 2 other P-38s, but this one is EPO and can be purchased as a RTF or ARF, add your radio, battery and Bob's your uncle..

http://www.bananahobby.com/1944.html

I will document the build as I expect this one to be easy. The other 2 P-38s came from Nitro Planes & E-flite & had their quirks..

The NP version is balsa/plywood, Nitro/EP version & took some head scratching to get all the electrics installed & the body built up. She flies well and is easy for an experienced beginner or intermediate pilot to manage, landings are pretty hot. Weighs 5 lbs with batteries.

The E-flite P-38 went together easily, took some messing around as the cable channels were a little convoluted and filled up really quickly. Adding the rudders has made this model a dream to fly. Easy for beginner pilots, except rough landings can be the single point of risk as this model is made from the white cooler foam that breaks into a million pieces easily. The tail booms are a known weak point that need inspection regularly as they snap off easily. Weighs just over 2 lbs with the single battery.

I already know that the retract speed has to be decreased. I will use one of those Turnigy 3 Channel Servo Speed/Direction Regulator to achieve this.

Two brushless outrunners, two esc's, ten servo's, and the plane... for $199. Did I read that right... Sweat deal for a great looking P-38. Let us know what the shipping comes to once it's all said and done.

Going with the silver?

Shipping worked out to something like $48.00. Amazing what great deals can be had when the Beaver bucks = Greenback.

He He!

Looks like you and me should get together for a formation flight!

I got the same one a few month back and just started taking pictures of it this week for posting on my club forum when I read your post- should be good swapping build info.

Anyways, mine is the green one.

This is the box as it sits ready to be played with : )

This is what the top layer looks like- Wings and tail feathers neatly packed away:

The lower layer contains the fuselage and tail booms:

This is the whole kit ready for some glue! The hardware bag has lots of cabling- I hope its not as bad as your Eflight P-38!

I like your idea of using the regulator for the retracts, I will have to include one in my next HK order...

I got the silver one. Swapping build issues will be great help for me and for anyone who follows.... The E-flite was just the pure ARF, I had to get all the electronics & cabling. That turned out to be a real guessing game.

Hopefully this one, coming with motors, ESCs, servos & wiring included will make life easier. All I have to do is add the battery, radio & servo driver to get her complete. Sounds simple huh?

What's that saying about the road to hell....????

I may have a spare servo controller here that I can send you $5 plus the cost of mailing to help you accelerate the build?

Just a note, that this unit will only work with a regular servo. It won't work with a true retract servo.

Thanks Chris. I do believe that the retract servos in this P-38 are standard servos. I will know for sure by this weekend because I plan to have it all done by then!
