Total momentary loss of control
Hi,
I have a Great Planes piper cub 81" on Hanger 9 floats with an O.S .55AX engine. The receiver is a Spektrum 6200 and I use a Spektrum DX7 transmitter. All the servos are Hitec and I have an altimeter installed in the fuse. I was just up for for a fly with a gopro camera on the wing, takeoff was perfect but when I get up to a comfortable elevation the plane started to like not respond to up elevator for a second. I keep giving it more then all of a sudden it shoots up. Its been doing this the last 4 or 5 times I had it in the air. Come to think of it the plane flew perfect with the camera on with the old floats never a problem. So I take the camera off and send it up again only to loose full control of the plane at about 6 or 7 hundred feet away it rolled twice like the ailerons were stuck, it was going up and yawing left for a couple seconds I walked toward the plane and seemed like i had control again and then lost it again and back again, got it turned toward me a little and got control again. Throttle off nose down and heading toward me i had a rough landing but saved it. Not sure what happened but I'm done with it until I can figure something out. I was in a turn using rudder, ailerons and a bit of up elevator. It was cold and some vapor was coming off the lake making it look a bit foggy, the windshield of the plane was covered with condensation. I had taken a warm plane out in the cold. The receiver and remote receivers lights were both on solid after landing the plane. Not sure what to look for, maybe it needs to be rebinded after I had it taken apart for battery change and float repair, and the battery was at 5.2 volts(4.8 volt pack) before flight. Any ideas would be great. Ron Last edited by supercub1974; 10-30-2011 at 08:45 PM. |

Re: Total momentary loss of control
Sorry but what kind of battery pack was it? 4.6v sounds a little weird to me, did you mean 4.8v? If so I'd strongly suggest moving to a 6v pack (5 cell) or lipo/life pack w/ regulator, especially in cold weather where the cold will affect the battery. Do you have a spektrum flight log available? Did you range test before flying?

Re: Total momentary loss of control
Do you have a spare receiver to put in. Check the existing receiver for issues. Rebinding might help.

Re: Total momentary loss of control
There have been quite a few reports of DX7 LOS. One thing you can check yourself is to ensure the range test button on the back is not partially depressed.

Re: Total momentary loss of control
As its a float plane, and assuming the Rx is installed in the same orientaion (antenna on the Rx perpendicular to the LOF), condensation could be an issue. I actually inquired as to the quality of some switches last week, some are real prone to failure (oxidization)due to condensation.
I was assuming that this plane/Tx/Rx aren't brand new. I have flown for a whole day with a 4.8V Rx pack @ less than freezing, and didn't have an issue. This of course depends on the load on the battery (extra lights.....), age of the battery (cycles), and a hundred other things. For a lot of us, troubleshooting can be a real PITA. Glad your last flight didn't turn out worse, let us know what you find. I'll be watching. |

Re: Total momentary loss of control
JR/Spektrum receivers are very picky about low voltage and using a 4.8 NiMh or Nicad pack is on the lower end of the safety zone (especially when you factor in the colder temp.) I always use a 2 cell lipo with a regulator or a 5 cell NiMh (6 volts) in my planes.

Re: Total momentary loss of control
I had a partially stripped output gear on my elevator servo exhibit this behaviour.

Re: Total momentary loss of control
the Ar 6200 is only meant to operate with a 3.5v - 9.8v range. As mentioned, they are really picky on low voltage. Best to have a ubec between your battery pack and receiver. (or at least a voltage regulator - aka capacitor)
As soon as the receiver reads a voltage lower than 3.5v , it resets. so when you actuate your elevators, the current draw may be too great and just dip the voltage to 3.2v, and boom, the ar6200 quick connect goes into action, resetting and giving you slight grief. When you land, and check, it's all good, since you're not drawing current from your battery pack, and the ar6200 is all happy. This is what it sounds like is happening with your setup. Cheers |

Re: Total momentary loss of control
See post # 29 for info regarding a capacitor.
https://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/show...=xanadu&page=3 I ordered some, and they work great. Might help with your situation. |
