Re: controller de-rating

Very good advice. Why work a part so hard it fails? I think Mr Miller has a bit of a low opinion of folks though when he says "most people treat the voltage and current specs on parts like batteries, ESC's and motors like speed limits, and figure that if an ESC is rated for 55 amps, running it at 65 amps every once in a while won't hurt".
It is true that a few do this, but I don't see planes bursting into flames when flown by "most people". Once in a while and only by a few people is what I see. Also the few become fewer each time an esc is smoked . Some learn faster than others.

Re: controller de-rating

I used to spec air fittings.
Some companies used max. working pressure, others used never exceed pressure.
Same thing goes for electronics, max. power vs. continuous power.

I also tend to strip off large patches of heat shrink plastic from the backs of heat sinks.
Better cooling = longer life

Thanks Ron.

Re: controller de-rating

As far as cooling goes, one year I went to N.E.A.T electric meet and had a talk with Patrick del Castillo from Castle Creations. He said that while the heat sink was important (for those controllers with them) the wires actually do most of the controller cooling. HMM. Don't cut those wires.

Re: controller de-rating

He probably was refererring to the component wires (FETs), not the battery wires.

No, sorry Ron. He was talking about the power and motor wires and mentioned that it is best to leave them the length the controller is supplied with. I assume the heat travels along the traces to the wires and then the wires act as a heat sink from there. However, this assumes that the user follows Mr. Miller's advice and does not over work the controller.
