adjustable temp hot glue gun

Got tired of melting my planes with hot glue, here is a easy fix.
Step1
Cut one wire on the glue gun cord
Step2
Splice a AC dimmer inline, ( if the cord has no ground just cut it off the dimmer)
Step3
Heat shrink the splices.

Done.

Takes some trial and error to figure out setting for specific types of foam.

Re: adjustable temp hot glue gun

That's a nice idea. I have one with two settings but high is very hot for some things and low barely melts the glue.

Re: adjustable temp hot glue gun

I don't like things like that that are not enclosed. It probably violates a couple of electrical safety rules here and there as well. For a more flexible solution, many years ago, I built a dimmer into a square electrical box, with a three wire power cord (so it would be grounded) with a duplex outlet beside the rotary dimmer. Now I can plug whatever resistive device (lamp, glue gun, low wattage hot plate, etc) into the outlet and dial up the heat I want on the dimmer. It is totally enclosed in a (grounded) metal box, with a cover plate on it as well, rubber feet on the back, and while I don't use it that often, it is handy to have.

Re: adjustable temp hot glue gun

Dave, I'm a electrician by trade, and I am not sure you could get the ESA to come have a look at your glue gun, lol. I have to agree with you, that would be the best way to do it, and it would be multi functional. The butt splices I use are rated for 600V and its common for resistive heating devices to have no ground. If your splices are done properly, and it is properly insulated there is no inherent danger. Also, AC dimmers dont have screw terminals, they have wire leads, making it very convenient and safe.

Re: adjustable temp hot glue gun

So - typically - how many watts is a standard dimmer switch rated for?

Re: adjustable temp hot glue gun

Looks like 600 watts is pretty typical:

Re: adjustable temp hot glue gun

A LOT more than a hot glue gun. Yeah 600W is standard.

Re: adjustable temp hot glue gun

Dimmers are awesome! Get yourself a 24V doorbell transformers, put the dimmer on the 120v line voltage side. Bingo you got an adjustable temp hot wire power supply.
I do 100% recommend that you have this in a proper electrical enclosure!

Re: adjustable temp hot glue gun

Cool! I have a soldering iron that gets way too hot & I'm constantly unpluging it to keep it under control. Thanks Merv
