As stated many times, the taxes are determined by the destination, not the selling province if you mail order. If you buy physically in the selling province then you pay their taxes. Just because Great Hobbies never collected PST when shipping to Ontario doesn't mean they weren't supposed to... |

Re: HST is coming to Ontario
With oil making a comeback the deficit might not be as bad as originally projected. Especially if all the oil companies decide to start up all the projects they put on hold.

Re: HST is coming to Ontario
With this topic I was interested and looked at my last invoice from GH. No Pst charged just Gst. So I am wondering if the HST will be charged to my orders?

1 Air..........Yes..that is the difference. The HST is collected and remitted to the federal government and PST portion remitted to the provinces by them. That IS the difference. So I will need to vidsit Alberta and pick up my stuff and save 7% in BC or order through the US and pick it up, stay a few days and save 12%. So much for local holidaying and the local economy. Re: HST is coming to Ontario
Partly right. For the seller there isn't.
But: there is (same as with GST/HST) for the buyer. The purchaser (you) are supposed to "self-assess" the tax and remit it to prov or fed (depending on which tax). Companies have been doing it (should have, anyways) for GST since 1991. Kind of meaningless though (more of a being able to track the tax for an auditor) as most just get a credit for it anyways (it boils down to an in-and-out accounting entry). If you didn't report it and was audited, you'd get assessed for the amount of the tax you should have reported plus penalty and interest . Then you'd get the tax (but not the penalty and interest) back on your next return when you filed for the credit. As far as PST, yeah you have to self-assess/report/pay that too. It's just that the provincial government has bigger fish to fry than you the individual to follow up on it (and now won't have to worry about because all the PST-related stuff is getting handed over to the feds). You gotta know, there's a law (tax-wise) for everything. Here endeth the accounting lesson for today Last edited by voyager_663rd; 10-17-2009 at 12:08 PM. |
