Red face Building with foamcore

You might find designing & building with 3/16" foamcore quite simple & inexpensive. To-day's foamies remind me of the process I outlined in the construction article FC FLOATER in Feb 88. MAN still sells the plans for that top-winger but their description is all wrong. Foamcore (& foam from grocery meat trays) are used in the formers only. These are capped with balsa so that any covering mat'l could be used & there is no denting of foam, something that may have turned you off that mat'l.
I still have the original plans for the 79" FLOATER, which flies much like an ultra-light. (7lb). Original engine was Saito .45.
I also did an article FOAMBOARD TECHNIQUES in RCM in 86, if you have old copies on hand. Most of the cutting is easily done with a wallpapering knife, as long as you hold that sharp knife @ a low angle so that you sheer the foamcore.
Cheapest supplier is Cadillac Plastics if you buy a 4x8 sheet.
Have fun! ED

Re: Building with foamcore

Well, thats a nice meory! I remember reading the article more than ten years ago and found it quite interesting. That was before we started using foam depron and bluecore for indoor and
outdoor flyers. I have a friend that used to build 33% aircraft from Carden plans using this method!

It's good to read that someone benefited from those techniques. Made my day, thanx.
