I wouldn't rule out 2-stroke glow, IF your going to go down the glow fuel road... When it comes to engines 2-strokes have the most power to weight ratio, and are the simplest.. An OS 60-90 would be one of the choices in this "2-stroke glow choice"..They would be the easiest to have as a first engine...
As for gas, that's a toughy for this size of aircraft.. A 20cc 2-stroke would do the job, but you might have to do some hacking to the cowl..
My choice would be a OS 90 FX glow... But that's me... It's glow, it's messy, but it's easy to opperate and it's bullet-proof...

Re: Best proven gas engine for my new plane

my second plane was a p-51 and i crashed it on its second flight. I disagrree with some saying def go with a gasser becasue glow is much simpler. put an os 75ax in it and fly 30 gallons through it. Gas is great and i own a few but if your learning just Keep it Simple.

Re: Best proven gas engine for my new plane

Personally, from my own years of experience, I wouldn't put a gas engine in anything smaller than a 1/4 scale aircraft. Yes, gas is more economical but your talking about a .60 sized plane here. As has been correctly stated, the power to weight is a serious consideration in a smaller plane.

My preference in this size plane would definitely be one of the Saitos you mentioned. A Saito 100 sounds about perfect. Even going as large as a 125 Saito, the cost of fuel is not going to be all that unreasonable. A gas engine is definitely going to be heavier which will greatly increase your wing loading...critical on a plane as small as a .60 size. You want to keep it as light as possible to get the best overall flying characteristics.

Going gas might save you some pennies on fuel but it will add unnecessary weight which can cause you to have a plane that will be a handful to control and take away your enjoyment of flying the model. At this stage of your flying experience, you don't want unnecessary frustrations. I would definitely not even think of going gas but stay with glow, whether 2 stroke or 4 stroke, I think that for a 60 sized plane, its the only way to go. Well....electric is also a consideration that might be worth looking into.
