Electric gear on glider

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hey there,
I'd like to electrify a "gentle lady" glider....fairly old model that came with a futaba FP-R3E x'tal receiver(3ch) and some futaba fp-s6 servos....they work well too (72.080 mhz....ooh boy!)
Anyhow, I was wondering (knowing nothing of electric flight), would I be able to install an electric motor+electronic speed controler to a Futaba FP-R127DF FM Receiver and a couple of futaba 3003 servos ?........thanks

72.080! Pre 1991 narrowband.
Any idea how old your glider is?

Re: Electric gear on glider

Yes you can convert it to electric ..
Biggest challenge is finding a motor that will fit .. Not sure of the diameter of the nose ?
This motor is 28mm in diameter x 30mm long
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=2112
Use about a 9x6 folding prop, a 20 amp esc and a 3S battery around 1500 to 2200 mAh
The other motor option is to use a geared in runner , but they cost more ..

Re: Electric gear on glider

I'm flying one, fly's like a dream too. I absolutely love it. Nothing fancy what so ever. I have a single lipo powering flight controls as well as motor and on 1300 I get 25min flights.

Re: Electric gear on glider

What motor are you using, Bill? I have Great Planes Spirit which is very similar to the Gentle Lady. I have been hauling it aloft with a Norvel .061 on a pod, but would like to go electric on it as well, and any suggestions would be welcome.

Re: Electric gear on glider

Paul, and Dave.
Anything in the 120 - 150 Watt size proped with a 10 X 6 folding prop would work well.
My 2 Meter EAG are using Dualsky XM2830CA, which are rated to 200watt, but proped at approx 120watt. 3cell, 1200 - 1800mah, 25amp ESC's
My 3 Meter EAG is propped approx 275watts, with motors capable of 350watts, 3cell, 40Amp ESC's
By running within the max capacity, and only short 10 - 30 sec bursts, all my equipment has provided over 2 years of reliable trouble free service.
Hope this helps.
Dualsky motors were available from Hiflight here in Canada, others will work aswell. Size by wattage.

A wattmeter will deffinatly save you at least one motor, or speed controller down the road. I stongly suggest starting with one as you get into electrics.

Re: Electric gear on glider

I think the glider and gear are from the late 80's....I see that some reconfiguring is needed, maybe moving the servos way back to make room for motor and ESC....There's a power pod selling on Towerhobbies that looks interesting and my help save some work and time.....guess I'll just do some more research before getting into it.........

Re: Electric gear on glider

This is just a cheap motor from china, don't remember where I got it from.

Re: Electric gear on glider

Excellent info!
Seems quite a few of us have the same intentions.
Bill, that motor looks like a clone to the A20-20L outrunner motor. about 1050 kV
It will pull a 9 x 6 or 10 x 4.7 prop no problem using less than 20 amps

Dave
