You won't have to beat me off Andrew. I will be there and back home in bed before you even get to North Bay! LOL. Man, I'd love to have a lathe. Always wanted one! However, I'm sure by our enthusiasm we've convinced Peter of how great a deal it is. Like I said, even a cheepie gas engine would set you back that much and a lathe will last forever! Heck, buy the lathe and make your own engine Peter! Andrew does it all the time!

lathe

Unfortunately, I think you have convinced me to buy the lathe. Maybe I'm reading a bit too much into the replies, but I have a gut feel that it may be a good deal

Thanks for all the input guys. I'll post some pictures if/when it's mine.

Listen Peter, now that I think about it, its not such a good idea for you to buy it. And to even help you out, tell the fellow I'll take it so he won't be disappointed that he didn't sell it. Hey, what are friends for right?

Lathe

Don't bother to buy the lathe. It is probably beat up and not worth the money.

Who did you say was selling it????

South Bend Lathe

Hi Peter, read your thread with great interest. I have the same Lathe 9inch, but it does have the Quick change box. I picked up mine from a school workshop about 25 yrs ago. I paid $500:00 dollars for it at that Time, and had to re-build some of it?.
I say go ahead and get it , and like someone else has said, if you don't like it etc, you will probably get more for it later any way.
I am willing to bet , that once you get it, and have it set up, start using it, you will never let it go -for any price.
Good luck with your venture , you are about to open a BIG new door to your already interesting hobby.
If I can be of any help, give me a dingle , any time. "D.B"

Thanks for the encouragement D.B. I have agreed to buy it. I checked it out today, it is in excellent condition. I'll get it in a few days. All the spare gears, tools, and bits are included. I'll post some pictures when I get it home.

9" South Bend Lathe Manual?

I now find myself in the market for a manual for the 9" South Bend lathe. Is there anyone who may be able to assist me?

Peter,
Congratultions I think you will really excited to start some projects and turn them out by yourself.
I joined the yahoo group for Atlas and a bunch of others which you can find by browsing once on there. The Southbend group is
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbendlathe
I think you will learn a lot from there and also books and parts.

Also, the south bend manual is actually a book, titled "the metalworking lathe".

It is being reprinted currently by Lee Valley Tools, and I have it. An excellent resource for any lathe owner but specifically for south bend lathes. Only $8 too!

Here is the link:

http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.a...=1,46096,46100

I also highly recommend the reprint of L Sparey's "The Amateur's Lathe", available through Busy Bee tools as well as other places that sell machine tool books.

You dont know what you have begun.... if you want to, now you can make allmost anything for your planes/helis/etc. Just limited by your imagination!
