It clicked for me when I learned not to control my way out of a bad spot.
When i learned to release the controls, rather than over control, then apply power, and "fly out as is" was the hardest thing I had to learn. Don't always try going upright. Fly it out inverted, knifeedge, whatever. Add power and the least amount of control to keep the nose up and maintain or gain altitude. When you figure this out, it lets you practice the mechanics of any move with confidence.

One of my aha moments was when I realized to always move the rudder stick in the same direction as the aileron stick when rolling from inverted .

It was a tip from Model Airplane News, about 35 years ago.

I had an issue and needed a lot of height to get over the 'flying towards you' aileron control thing!

I would physically turn my back to the plane, and look over my shoulder at the plane so i wouldn't crash! That wasn't right and it was uncomfortable!

So MAN tips section, mentioned that with the PLANE COMING AT YOU, and you facing the plane, IF A WING DROPS, MOVE THE AILERON STICK IN THE DIRECTION OF THE LOW-WING to right the plane.

This tip saved me multiple aircraft since then, and made it easier to move on.

However, i still do have some minor issues with the 'right' circuit, when approaching from the right for landing. I force myself to concentrate harder when i know that this situation is coming.

Cheers

I've heard of this one before. I couldn't wrap my head around it so I tried it on the sim a few moments ago. Then it clicked!

Works like a charm!

Thought to myself, okay its down, let go of the stick and keep the darn thing down!!

I see many other pilots doing the same thing so, bounce, bounce, bounce on landing...
My Pulse 125 almost always bounced down the runway - this could be the reason why. Thanks for the tip!

Re: THAT's When It Clicked!!! - Flying Skills Improvement Thread

"FLARE WITH THE THROTTLE"

This was a tip from Mario last year when I was just getting into gassers, and it made landings them a touch easier for me.

I would try to flare as i always have in RC and full scale, but with the power of these engines these days, i found we were flying on the edge of the stall a lot more, and i wasn't used to it.

Giving a little 'blurp' of the throttle if things aren't perfect gives that little bit of speed and slows the descent just nicely.

this may not apply to all people and all planes, but it works for me, when needed.

Re: THAT's When It Clicked!!! - Flying Skills Improvement Thread

A wise man once told me: Anyone can fly fast, but not everyone can fly slow!!

It didn't click until much much later, now it's mainstream (3-D).

Hey Brad, I have been trying this one out when sim practicing, as I have been working on more inverted manoeuvres, and it makes it easier for sure!

Thx

All these little tips are great!

Re: THAT's When It Clicked!!! - Flying Skills Improvement Thread

Was watching an episode of "MAYDAY" yesterday when one of the "pilots" talked about the three things that you need to survive an emergency: "Altitude, airspeed and ideas".

Have to say it, this is a truism, considering the times that I've run out of all three, sometimes at the same time over the local swamp....

Re: THAT's When It Clicked!!! - Flying Skills Improvement Thread

Just got in from my first "gas" flight of the year. Brrrrr! Anyway, I've decided that this year I would try flying "pinch style". After over 500 flights flying thumbs I was sure the transition was going to be difficult. Nope! But Sim time helped.

One observation was that the need to use rate switches is lessened. After take-off I switched all the control surfaces to high and left them there, even to land. As I fly a plane like a plane (and have spent considerable time attempting Pattern and Scale Areobatic sequences) this new found methods just seems so much smoother. It might not be for the guys that fly a plane like a helicopter!

I have small hands (like a 8 year old girl), but the pinch methods allowed me easier access to the switches I normally use. Until now I've never considered using flight modes, I can see I'm in for some modifications to my Tx programming.....

Here's another expression that helps ..... also from a "Mayday" episode if I remember correctly ...... just apply the appropriate scale .....

"Try to never fly your airplane through a piece of sky that your mind has not just gone through a few minutes before"
