Ring Replacement
Ok
Picked up a 50 cc pro Had head broken cause (unsure .) I am ordering new head rings and gasket set . My concern is installing A -rings (is there any special alignment for the rings to be at and best way to do this ) B-once rings are on --getting it in the new cylinder head. Tools are limited how ever as a great dealer Paragon has offered to this this free .All as I( can say is these are great business people for the modeler and they will handle all your needs at a surprisingly fair price. Bottom line is before I accept there generous offer I would like to try this myself for the experiance.. Please ignor I have decided to leave it to the experts at Paragon Sparky. Re: Ring Replacement
i don,t know how much experience you have with engines.before you take the head off.if it isn,t already, make sure you loosen the head bolts or complete cylinder base bolts in a circular pattern so you don,t end up warping the head or cylinder.the piston should have a piston ring alignment pin on the piston itself.i,m not familar with that engine.if it has two rings, you will remove the top one first then remove the second ring after.it,s the opposite when installing the new rings.
i would be a good idea to borrow a piston ring installer.this tool makes it easier to install rings.piston rings can be installed without one if you know what your doing.also pay attention to how the ring sits in the piston.make sure the cylinder and piston are clean and use oil to assemble the piston and cylinder.hope this helps.

Re: Ring Replacement
If the dealer has offered to do it I would take them up on it.
They will likely inspect the rest of the engine and tell you if it requires more work. Better to have them do it and know that all is well with the engine. They will likely stand behind their work too. It's very easy to break a ring while installing it. Some pistons have a pin to properly locate the gap in the ring. Others don't and you need to be carefull that the gap isn't lined up where there is a port in the cylinder wall. You also need to ensure that the groove in the piston is clean and free of carbon and other deposits. |

Re: Ring Replacement
You've made a good call.
There's no problem learning. Just remember, that once you're in the deep end, the only wy out is by yourself. When I flew full size and screwed up, there was only one guy who could save the day. And that was the guy in the pilot seat. Gets scarey sometimes. Take that old clunker you've got and have at it. No harm done that way. |

Re: Ring Replacement
Hate to be negative but a "broken" head sounds ominous and usually means the engine has suffered a major impact (crash).
Make sure the crankshaft is not bent too.

Re: Ring Replacement
Hi Kevin
I have taken that into cosiderationand yes I am taking a chance . However Ray a Paragone in Canada has agreed to check it over . Parts are very reasonable from them so I ask you . If I can fix this for 60.00 and paid 100.oo for it .Would you have done the same. Come on you rascal you know you would. LOL Oh by the way the guy in Florida assured me there was no marks on head or piston. Picture for viewing. Sparky

Re: Ring Replacement
Smart choice getting them to rebuild it. I don't know how it had the head broken off but I did one on a racing 40 years ago. Hitting pavement wide open inverted sheared everything off above the motor mount. Could not have done a better job with a hack saw.
I hope they check it real close for you especially the rod and crankshaft. Anything could be bent after seeing your pic. John

Re: Ring Replacement
Ouch! That was no minor crash by the looks of that poor cylender!
I met Ray at the KW Swap Meet last Saturday and he is really a heck of a nice guy. I asked about a slight problem with an engine I purchased from him (CRRC pro Gf26i Gasser) and he said not to worry about it but if it ever should need attention he will look after it 100% @ no charge. It wasn't much, just an ever so small crack in one of the little fins that helps striegthen the bolt mount on the back plate. He said he has seen this on a couple of engines and they were flown with no problem what so ever. If need be he said he will replace the entire back plate no charge for part or labour. I would deal with him again anytime. I would honestly recommend sending your engine in to Ray and let him do the rework for you. For the little he will charge you it will give you peace of mind that your not risking you model to an engine failure. And believe me, if it decides to blow apart in mid flight, Its going to happen at the worse possible time. Murphy's law & gravity just will not be ignored!
