Fuel tank size

Is 24 oz a bit big for a DLE55 and 17 lb airplane.
I am thinking of switching the 24oz Dubro for a 500ml fiji water bottle to cut back on the weight.
From what I can gather 16oz should be plenty for 10-12 min. flights plus about 4oz reserve.
As usual any input appreciated.

Re: Fuel tank size

Just local aerobatics with a bit of 3d. Stricty visual flight rules so no alternate required.

Re: Fuel tank size

Either tank is fine, whatever you have room for.
Always nice to have extra fuel though, especially for those real nice days when everything is going just right.

A water bottle in the 16oz range will be perfect

Thanks, trying to balance weight and fuel required.
Now if I can figure out where to locate the fuel dot...

Re: Fuel tank size

Thanks, definately dropping the volume down.
Either, water bottle or just smaller dubro.
Lot of plumbing to sort out.

Re: Fuel tank size

Hey pjp01,

I actually went the opposite direction as you with regards to tank size. On my DLE-55 (15.5lb 88" Edge) I had to land dead stick twice because I ran out of fuel on the stock 16 or 18oz tank (can't recall what it was). And those were only 11 minute sport flights... I definately wasn't being super gentle on the throttle, but in no way was it at WOT most of the time either.

My buddy had the same issue with his (after making fun of me for burning more fuel than normal). We both made the switch to 24oz tanks. Now, I land with about 1/3 left after a 12 minute flight. Much more practical and it'll save my airframe. I do find I burn less fuel practicing IMAC mostly now (with lots of idle downlines), but 16oz still makes me uneasy. 500mL = 17oz btw.

IMO 22oz would be the perfect size for good flight time, but I couldn't get the 22oz tanks to fit properly in my plane.

If you're 3D'ing then use as small as you can get. Personally, if I need to save weight on the 24oz tank, I only fill it 3/4 full. Provides nice flexibility.

I'm currently building a 1L Fiji water bottle tank on my 100cc actually. It looks good and saved me 4oz! You'll like yours!

Egan

Re: Fuel tank size

Thanks, I have set up a 500ml fiji for now. Carden includes a 24 oz dubro in their accesory kit. THe dubro tanks go from 16 to 20 then i think 24. I thought I would give the fiji bottle a try and see what the comfort level is.
Its a light tank but easy to switch to one of the bigger ones if necessary.
Going with a 3 line system.
Thanks for the reply.
