1/5th Dave Platt Spitfire
Not sure why I never posted anything on this build. Better late than never, I guess. This is a partially built kit that I picked up from RedBaron, through RCC (thanks Charles!!), fuse was mostly built, wings were framed, but not sheeted. No landing gear, but just about everything else needed. I won't be installing the Pica/Platt cockpit kit, instead, I'll save up and get the 1/5th kit from IFlyTaillies, I've bought stuff from them in the past, and amazing.
I have already purchased their decal sheets, which have all the small placards, warnings, etc, and look perfect. For markings, I've got Buzz Beurlings KHB, the last Spit (Mk IX) that he flew prior to leaving the RCAF. This particular build is going to be a bit of a what if, i.e. what if he'd stayed in, as it will also have D-Day markings. Not 100% true to life, but hey, it's my dream! lol I'll get more pics posted, but wanted to show my style of glassing wings. I've used 1.5oz cloth, with one coat of Z-poxy. Once dried, I coat the entire wing with glaze and spot putty, 95% of which will get sanded off. So, tonight's pic is the wing after applying all the putty!! |

Re: 1/5th Dave Platt Spitfire
The shop is rather full. Doing a Ziroli Syraider for a friend, and a Don Smith Mosquito for another friend. I've got another Dave Platt 1/5 plane, an Me-109 on the go, a smaller 81 in Mossie, TF Corsair, and repairs slated for a Giant Aeromaster, and Ultra Sport 60. Leeann and I are also finishing a Goldberg trio, Ultimate Biplane, Sukhoi, and Super Chipmunk, and she's got a Pitts S-1 and TF Cessna 182 on the go! Busy times for us in the winter, that's for sure!

Re: 1/5th Dave Platt Spitfire
I will also be following closely as I also recently got a Pica 1/5 scale Spitfire wich is almost at the same stage of completion. I looked at the Iflytailies website and they got some great looking stuff although the cockpit kits are a little pricey... If you have the Pica cockpit kit and want to sell it, send me a private message, I might be interested. So far I have been able to get the Pica Spinner and a very cool set of scale retract with a scale looking tailwheel. I will be installing an ASP 180FS in mine, what engine are you planning to install?
Alain

Re: 1/5th Dave Platt Spitfire
I was going to put a Moki 1.8, it's what Dave Platt recommends over any other engine, but I'd like to get all my big stuff over to gas. I've got two Moki's for sale, the one on the Spit is brand new, and have another one in excellent condition, both with pitts style mufflers. I've got a DLE 35RA on the way, so hoping to fit that. I've got most of the sanding done on the bottom of the wing. Soon as it's ready for primer, I'll get some more pics, and I'll get some pics of the fuse. I removed the hardwood rails, as the Moki came with a rear mount, and the rails weren't set up for the Moki anyhow. I've also built in a fuselage crutch into the area from the firewall back to the trailing edge. The original wing mounting blocks were simply glued to the balsa sheeting of the fuse, and wouldn't have lasted a single flight in my opinion. I'll get shots of those mods as well.

Re: 1/5th Dave Platt Spitfire
lol that doesn't include a few other projects on the go, and a pile of kits and plans waiting in line. We work pretty fast together, we'll have the Sukhoi and Ultimate done by the end of this week, hopefully the Super Chipmunk as well, that will add 3 more to the stable!

Re: 1/5th Dave Platt Spitfire
Yes, and I managed to pass it to Leeann, which rocks. Except when she decides she's building one of my favorite kits. But, then I just buy another one, so it's all good. Probably why we have a TF Giant Scale P-51, and a pair of 60 sized TF P-51s, and a pair of TF Corsairs. . .. That's why we had to buy the 17 foot cargo trailer to haul them with. Of course, I then had to buy a new truck, to haul the trailer. Wow. You're so right. But we refuse any help for our addiction!!!

Re: 1/5th Dave Platt Spitfire
Most guys as well as myself use .5 oz or .75 oz fiberglass cloth and 2 coats of finishing epoxy. The second coat of epoxy is the filler coat and uses very little epoxy. Wondering why you use the method described and 1.5 oz cloth?
