Re: 35% AMR Decathlon Build

Yep... I'd love to build the bigger one, but I don't have the trailer space at the moment.

This is the middle of the three AMR Decathlons out at the moment. It should be closer to your standard 40% IMAC plane when done. It seemed to be right in the Goldilocks zone.

They also have a 25% Decathlon

Re: 35% AMR Decathlon Build

Been a busy week leading up to Christmas, but I managed to squeeze in some more building.

I've almost got the left wing panel to the point where I'm ready to sheet it.

The first step is to build the jig.

There's an amazing amount of plywood used in the Jig:

Once it's assembled it looks like this:

While clamping the jig to a straight edge and squares, you fasten the jig to your building table with some screws.

Unfortunately, I made a minor mistake when building the jig... I failed to realize that the leading edge and trailing edge sides of the jig are actually different. (The depth of the slots for the ribs is slightly different). I only realized this after the jig was completely glued and fastened to building board. After a few carefully selected 4 letter words, I decided that the jig was still useable.

So word of warning... When putting together the jig, on Wing Step 2-a, Double/Triple check that "WJ1" and "WJ3" are not swapped around. In a future revision of the kit, it might be a good idea to make the tabs slightly different so the pieces can't fit together incorrectly (hint hint).

Anyways, moving along.

The next step was to cut a ton of ribs out of the laser cut plywood:

Did I mention I'm going to have enough scrap plywood bits to last a lifetime?

Construction of the wing is pretty standard. Spruce spars, plywood ribs, and 1/4" square balsa sticks to help support the sheeting:

Re: 35% AMR Decathlon Build

The wing includes hardpoints for the strut mounts, and aluminum fittings that will poke through the sheeting:

The cardboard wing tube also gets glued in at this point.

The wing panel is a full 60". It barely fits on my build table. There is about 1" overhang on each side when it's centered on the table:

Up next, I have to sand the wing as it is in preparation for sheeting. Hopefully family won't miss me over Christmas as I disappear into the workshop.

Looks great Tom! That wing construction is nearly identical to the AirTractor!!

Re: 35% AMR Decathlon Build

Got last week's video rendered and added to the main YouTube Playlist

Here you go. It's wing building... Up to the point where I glued in the cardboard tube for the wingtube.
