I just want earbuds that will tell me if I'm in lift, not something to watch on my transmitter I found SkyAssistant variometer on google, you have to buy a separate receiver---does anyone have success with this ?

Re: Cheap and easy variometer

You set the vario output/telemetry on the transmitter with FRSKY and listen to the "neeps"

Re: Cheap and easy variometer

I would have liked to drive my model a pickup at 70mph on the highway too but the tech just wasn't there in 1930 at the price.

Good luck.

Re: Cheap and easy variometer

A solution for existing radio systems has been discussed in this thread. See my recap post below.

https://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/sho...&postcount=156

The receiver is a MATEK ELRS 2.4G Vario Receiver ( LINK ) for C$37.

The transmitter is the RadioMaster ELRS Pocket ( LINK ) which just came to the market recently for less than C$100. It's selling fast though, hence the low stocks.

Just fasten the receiver into the model and power it up with a servo cable extension. No need to plug servos - the ELRS receiver is only used to measure barometric pressure and send back telemetry data. The ELRS transmitter (which controls nothing) can be programmed to receive the ELRS telemetry - altitude and vario - so that you have a choice between audio feedback (usually for vario) or alarms (for altitude limits).

As for the antiquated vario sensor you have linked, it's sending vario audio onto UHF airwaves so you need a special radio tuned to the exact frequency to hear it. The radio is most likely no longer available, but you could use a SDR (Software-Defined Radio) USB module ( LINK ) you can buy on Amazon for C$60 and use a free software called GQRX ( LINK ). Plug the SDR dongle into a laptop, tune it to the correct frequency with GQRX, and you're ready to go.

Re: Cheap and easy variometer

I once found the guts of a govt. weather balloon at the beach. A circuit board smaller than an ice cube had dead battery, so I hooked 9V to it. It transmitted a howling sound on FM
radio bands, that went up when I breathed on it and I wish I kept it

Re: Cheap and easy variometer

In any case ; what is required is a pressure sensor that plugs into some sort of transmitter that sends a signal to a receiver that translates that into a digital signal display on a small screen. Variometers are much simpler as they only need to supply a audio signal at the end source with a rising tone goes up in pitch on lift and a lowered tone when on descent but will not work for altitude.
The only company that made anything close was Eagle Tree but they are out of business as of a few years ago. If a person checked on RCGROUPS in the US , something might be found there.
