AMR 50cc Profile Plane - Design Thread

Hey all,

Michel emailed me on Friday asking if I would desing a 50cc profile plane. He had a shopping list of features and I told him i thought I would be able to do it. Brian Fisher was the catalyst when he emailed AMR last week asking if we would design one. I have been talking with him and Michel and have a list of features we are hoping to have.

-Less than 16lbs RTF
-2000+ inches of wing
-big slab fuse for awesome knife edge
-VERY EASY to build and fix
-Made for common 50cc engines.
- Room to hide electronics and ignition

Well after some sketching and a few hours of messing about I have the beginning of the design. basically to will have 2 fuse sides and lay in all the formers. Then the other side goes on and the edges are sheeted. I think you could build the fuse in one night with this method and it will be strong and light. My goal is to have the fuse and tail less than 10lbs with the engine and servos installed leaving 6 lbs for the wings.

SPECS
Wing
24in Chord
90in Span

Length from engine hub to tail = 90in
Height of Fuse 22in
Predrilled for Da50 and dle55

If anyone has ideas I am happy to entertain them. kepp in mind we want simple, light and easy to build!!!

Here are some preliminary pics

Re: AMR 50cc Profile Plane - Design Thread

Awesome Kevin!!!! I'll definitely build one of these!!!!

Some suggestions I'll throw out for 3D

- massive ailerons... At least 1/3rd the width of the wing at the root.... 9-10" wide at root!!
- massive elevators... 2/3rd's the area of the tail feathers
- 70deg throws minimum
- 1 piece LG versus the normal AMR design of 2.... Way less stresses.
- target 14-15lbs or for 16lbs, target a wingspan of 95".

There was a company at Nall selling something similar... They flew incredible on a DLE55 and had a WS of 100" at 16.5lbs

Cheers

Trev

Pretty sweet Kevin, I love profile planes! Built a few myself, great 50cc platform for hacking up the sky without breaking the bank maybe?
I also like the idea of making provisions in design for hiding the wiring and such.

This would be my ideal 3D trainer! Great idea - looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Re: AMR 50cc Profile Plane - Design Thread

Have a hanger full of profiles. .15 to 50cc. It adds a little to the kit cost but a carbon tube structure inside the fuse makes them stronger but still flexible enough to not break if you bounce them. Are you thinking thick wing to be a floater or thinner and more responsive? My 50cc is an 80" wingspan with 1" thick foam fuse. Has a very thick wing and is a real floater as Trevor found out when he flew it.

Re: AMR 50cc Profile Plane - Design Thread

I would want to see the design to be able to incorporate beam mounted engines as an option.

For my BME 50cc engine I would need an opening of 2.50 inches. Many that I know who fly Profiles use large glow engines that are all Beam Mounts.

The old Aeroworks design gave you that option.

Being able to build the fuselage with an option as to what style of engine you have would increase the number of consumers who would be interested in purchasing this plane.

Brian,

My thinking is with this design you could use a standard motor mount to mount any older bean style engines. What do you think?

Here is the latest update!!!!

Re: AMR 50cc Profile Plane - Design Thread

Don't know if this is possible but could it be designed to accept wings from other planes?

My thinking is many of us have wings and stabs from crashed planes, fuse is gone. I have a good set of wings and stabs from a pilot yak as well as an extra 260. Both 30cc size but I was hoping you would do a smaller size as well.

I thought of building my own but it would be nice to be able to buy an adaptable profile.

( I did ask Tony at Pilot about this a while ago but guess he wasn't interested, no reply)

That is an interesting idea. Really you would just need the wing are to be blank wood to adjust. I will defiantly look into it!

Yes you could if :-

You can find a motor mount that is large enough for 50 cc planes. I have seen them for 30cc planes but none for larger engines.

If the engine was mounted your way, the mufflers would now stick out sideways, not down as in other profile planes.

Again its just more obsticales and added expenses that might detract potential buyers.
